Favourite technological word

jack.chaney56 mentioned that his favourite word was "Just" as in, "it just works" which often hides a massive amount of work done by others to make it happen for you.

My favourite is "Simply" which comes up in our requirements statements. e.g. "It simply needs to guide the rocket and land on the asteroid". We find it used most when the person writing the request has no idea at all about what needs to be done.

TCO's can actually be realised if the Salesman hasn't sold you snake oil and the usage model accurate.

TCO won't be realised if the expected use has not occurred.

For example.  A3 Laser Printers and toner cartridges - It is a fallacy that buying them in bulk will save you money.

Unopened Toner Cartridges become stale as fast as open ones!!!

TCO: For compatible Toner Cartridges - Many just don't work and make a huge mess.

Just don't try to collect Toner powder using a normal vacuum cleaner - Its particles are fine enough to escape through the air filters and fill you whole office with toner powder.

Also don't wash your hands of toner with hot water. The heat activates the resin to make it stick to your skin!

How about a phrase like TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) ...failing that any of the cringe phrases that the corps bring up .

I like them as they score highly on my buzzword bingo game image

My wife was good at that.

When we first moved here we had a list of jobs to tackle and the list keep growing, rather than reducing.

Every job was thought to be a "5 minute " job until I started adding the number of hours I estimated it would take.

The list slowly reduced after that ...

5 minute job.  That has to be a family favorite.  My dad would always fix stuff, because he knew he could do it better than the "professionals", and this was quite often true. What he neglected most of the time was it would get fixed in his head a lot faster than the actual process.  I learned most of my colloquial verbal language during those times.

    Jack.

Is that like Ken Thompson designing a unix system call called "creat" rather than create?

Or Niklaus Wirth with incorrect operator precedence in Pascal?

Isn't more like "It'll be a five minute job."?

"Sort of" in the context of "sort of works".

I was working for a big industrial company that had invested in a University Medical school that had developed an ultrasound instrument that we were taking on to production. The designer in his introduction to me said the instrument "sort of" works. By "sort of" he meant " we have worked on this for 3 years been paid loads of money but the instrument still does not work"...
