Favourite technological word

jack.chaney56 mentioned that his favourite word was "Just" as in, "it just works" which often hides a massive amount of work done by others to make it happen for you.

My favourite is "Simply" which comes up in our requirements statements. e.g. "It simply needs to guide the rocket and land on the asteroid". We find it used most when the person writing the request has no idea at all about what needs to be done.

Yes, when it comes to words, the one that always alerts me is "it will be easy" or "its just a couple of lines of code".

At one place I worked, we were fond of the acronym SAMP: "Simply A Matter of Programming".  Of course, SAMP might entail 10K lines of code, but at least you didn't need a hardware change image

Maybe I watched too much Star Trek on B&W TV when I was a kid, but my favorite tech word is "interesting", as in "that's an interesting problem".  I once had a student point out that I used "interesting" as a euphemism for "difficult".  "Interesting" is also a good word to describe anomalous behavior -- a polite version of "WTF?"

The classic line is Larry Wall, that said "If I'd known Perl was going to be such a big thing, I would have spent more time designing it right"

    Ha! image

"Just" was a danger word when my old boss used it. If he said "Can you just..." or "It just needs..." or "If you could just..." you knew it was going to be a bad one! It was his attempt to placate you and suggest that the job was something and nothing before he quietly mentioned that the control box you "just" needed to access was actually 150 feet up on the side of a building, and on the other side of the country.

...priceless!!! How many times have the powers said, "the development board can just become the production platform."
