Help: Am I crazy or is this chip dead?

Hello people, I need some help with this issue.

(The chip that was supposed to be in the socket is SAB0600, from Siemens.)

I assembled the circuit "textbook style", EXACTLY replicating the circuit shown in the datasheet.

Circuit both assembled as-is on both breadboard and perfboard.

But it doesn't produce any sound when the switch is engaged (it should produce three chimes)

On breadboard, the circuit did make DC clicking noise when 100 microfarad capacitor was inserted backwards.

I do not have a multimeter yet that could reliably check the voltage, but using a trusted 5V power source and tuned analog multimeter, I verified that the power supply is outputting 9V, which is in-spec.

All chips bought from eBay, none of them came in static-safe packaging, not even the pink foam.

I had one sound chip that was not working and UM3482A Melody IC that didn't emit literally ANY noise even with all the components in the right place.

Am I crazy and killed all the chips, or am I stupid and I did something wrong, or was the chip faulty?

Any help is greatly appreciated, please tell me your opinions.

Sorry for the drunken soldering job, I still have problems with my hands.

    Hi Phil,

It may be good to closely examine the IC, it could be fake. The SAB0600 could likely be obsolete (it is several decades old), so parts have a strong likelihood of being fake or reused parts. The same could apply to the other part you mention. I don't buy ICs from ebay for this reason.

There is a photo of what the SAB 0600 should look like here:

It does have some questionable markings, as shown in the picture:

    image

The chip has lasered on markings and has no date codes.

The chip has what looks like sloppily written letter "F" on it, shown here:

    image

The top stroke goes all over the place.

    image

The legs have some suspicious scores on it too.

Also, the other chip is COB with small circuit board, and UM3482A chip is shown below:

I'm not sure on the UM.. chip, that may be fine, a lot of these types of ICs were sold for COB applications for greetings cards etc., as well as the DIP package.

    Phil,

Looks like you have the pinout mirrored on the perf board.

    Yes, I agree.

A better option is the 555 (you've probably already used that), it is far more popular. It only generates one tone, but there are many circuits that can manipulate it in special ways, to generate (say) siren type sounds. You can combine two 555's to make even more interesting sounds.

Oops, missed that part.  Check page 8 in the datasheet, Figure 5 shows a circuit for a battery driven circuit and there is a note that says a capacitor is absolutely necessary for battery operation. Maybe try putting another 100uF across the battery terminals as a quick check. I also noticed there is another capacitor that is missing from pin 3 to ground. Maybe add the two and try before going through the return hassle. Worst case is it still doesnt work.

    (EDIT):

Realized you mentioned power supply but the capacitors still should be there for some filtering.  Found this for you though, looks to be the newer version. The only problem is that the DIP package doesnt have any available but the 8-SOIC does.

Could it be a faulty switch perhaps ?

To make sure I wasn't crazy and used parts from mixed-up rejects bin, I checked EVERY single wire, switches and sockets for faults.

They were all fine. The only thing that remains a mystery is the components themselves, as this multimeter cannot be trusted for anything beyond voltage measurement.
