The ID system for referencing members is kind of neat, but how do you figure out what the handle is for the member you want to reference?
Am I missing something? Where is this information listed? Shouldn't this primary ID be shown on the user profile page?

All the ways listed above work.
The way I almost always do it is to avoid the @ mention functionality entirely, and just copy and paste a member in. If you right click on a members name in a discussion and do "copy link address" or "copy link location", then just paste that into whatever you are writing, that also does an @mention.
I find that a lot easier, although I almost always am responding - I very rarely start my own content. This may bias me in the way I do things
