I've got to the bottom of it. Someone put something very bad into the username blacklist, the end result of this was that it was blocking any name that began with a k. Kim, Klaus, Kris, all of these were being blocked.
I've removed the setting now.
botheration - you should be able to change your name to your actual name now (although I suspect some in the community will call you ReallyKim from now on 
)
