Element 14?

dtozer
dtozer over 11 years ago

I am new to Element 14, senior in years, engineering qualification(s), business development, corporate management.

I get lost in to much information like what you have to offer.

I find most websites are over powering visually.

"That looks interesting, then get lost in the original search".

    Well, this is  interesting!

Look forward to participating to the best of my ability or inability, whatever!

I do like to jab and joke around so sometimes I can go off in a direction only I know, right off the wall.

Bit like John Cleese and the Monti Group, my favorite Crew.

I am to old to be taken seriously and to serious to be taken!

    Go figure!

I will see where all this leads me

    Hi David,

    Welcome to Element 14.

You will find several of us old dogs hanging around on the site, so if you get confused just ask.

Sometimes it is hard to keep focus when you see a lot of information presented, especially by young engineers or makers.  They tend to assume everyone knows what they do and use minimum descriptions for issues that leave some of us wondering what they were talking about.  Hmm, sounds like me in my younger days. image

Learning how to properly document a project takes time, experience and a desire to communicate better.

If you are lucky, you learn soon enough to really boost your career.  If not, well you tend to be moved into other areas.

Overall, there is a very nice mix of people here and there are a number of people here who can really describe projects with great clarity.

So I would say just take your time, take notes, and ask questions.

    DAB

It's not the information that's overwhelming.  It's the data surrounding and burying that information that's overwhelming.

To qualify as information, a bit has to be "a difference that makes a difference" [Gregory Bateson].  Otherwise it's just data.

I'm not sure the three of us should congregate in one place. The young guys might catch us and make us join the Old Farts Group.

Yes, I know what you mean, pencil and paper, nothing like it, never will be.

Batteries, computers, fuses and generally speaking all electronics die at sometime or another.

Never seen a battery powered pencil!

One IT consulting contract I almost lost two weeks data collection, banking industry, fortunately the work was back-up over night on server.

I only lost/misplaced one day of work.

I had kept written brief notes so the time lost was minimal and yet still billable, no loss of revenue.

From that day, some 15 years ago I have never trusted computers, they fail!

    Super Dave!

It afflicts us all. I use paper and pencil to keep me on course, otherwise off I go. Recommend find the one most interesting place and join just that group. Also periodically look at the following and unfollow things...

    Hi David,

I too have to limit my information intake. It seems that those of us who grew up before the internet are conditioned to try and take in more than we can handle. Before the internet, information came slowly, in smaller pieces or in books. It was somewhat self regulating. I like this site as you can join or follow the groups that interest you and bypass the others. If you see something that you want to comment on you are automatically tied into that conversation. In any case welcome to E-14.

    John
