If you've been following along with some of my blog posts, you may have already seen that I've been trying to fix a PlayStation 4.

In particular, its HDMI port. Now you probably are already very familiar with HDMI and its various standards, ultimately it is a tricky port to solder, and it's even more awkward to 'get right' because it uses a method of transferring packets of data at a very high speed. In fact, HDMI 2.0 can transfer at up to 18 gigabits per second.

 

This isn't the only type of high speed connector and standard available, DisplayPort is another one which is dedicated to different types of graphics, but there are many others, and we've introduced them to you in our Essentials course: Connectors V High-Speed Connectors

 

There're also other connectors you're likely familiar with , those used to terminate your category 5, 6 or 7 networking cables, SATA cables, and even others used in higher speed data centres for networking and other data transfer throughput.

 

What I personally don't know, is:

 

  • Which connector is best for which standard?
  • Why are there so many similar standards? (For example, VGA can go over DVI, which can go over HDMI, which can go over DisplayPort? Why?)
  • What's the fastest protocol standard for going over these connectors?
  • What's the best way to implement these connectors, and what's the best setup for dielectrics when connecting them to their counterparts on a printed circuit board?

 

 

We want to look at creating an element14 presents video based on high speed connectors.

 

Where should we be focusing our efforts on helping to introduce this topic and the surrounding technical information to help best supplement these parts?

    I'm really curious to learn more about impedance and length matching for differential pairs (which might be a topic related to EDA tools more than connectors?), I only know it's important but don't know…

    Learning how to mess with EDID data and roms is so useful or monitors that don't report themselves correctly...

    Yes, I've had to create custom EDID data tables a few times in order to get AV components to play nicely together.

    Joe Cornwall did an interesting 5-part webinar series on this subject on Infocomm (now AVIXA) a number of years ago. I can't find a link to the recordings but while searching I came across this which may be of interest:
