What have you discovered that has improved your user experience at the new E14 Community site?

I have been feeling disconnected from the E14Community since the move to the new site. The majority of the feelings came from actually not being able to communicate after the move. I could receive but not transmit. Making or responding to posts wasn’t possible. Rather frustrating to read stuff and no be able to respond. After being shown a work around that enabled my transmit, the communication part has been solved.

The disconnect feeling remains because things have moved and I can't find what was once familiar to me. I will continue to struggle until I can reconnect with the sources of information I had on the old site. Here are some touch points I have been using to help recover from my disconnect. 

In the past I ignored the the landing page and clicked on CONTENT All. From that site pulse point, I got a reasonable picture of changes in the environment. The CONTENT All doesn’t exist on the new site.

My lesson 101 to reconnect is to invest in the Landing page. I turn over the tabs of Recent Content section in the lower part of the Landing Page. The posts under these tabs are suppose to reflect some of the site content as it is updated. There are some issues with this being updated but tech support is aware and working on it. Since RoadTest are important to me, I also explore what is under the RoadTests button from the landing page.

My third location for content culling is the Member Area. From the landing page it is easy to navigate to the location.

I pursue the Recent Discussions section for details.

That is three touch points I am investing in to re-establish my connection. If you have discovered something on the new site that has helped reconnect, I encourage you to share. The faster we can discover what works, the faster our community returns.

  • Keeping with the theme of discovery, I received and error message and then discovered the cause and how to fix it. Here is the knowledge.

    I made a forum post, unknown to me it wasn't in the most appropriate group.  The moderator moved it and I lost the ability to reply and received an error message, indicated by the two eclipses.

    Wait! This worked before and doesn't work now? I know what has changed because I was told. Let's see if I can figure it out.

    I clikced on the Arduino group from the above message.

    I was taken to this group screen. One eclipse indicates the group. By selecting the join option I was rewarded with the joined group message.

    Now I get a reply button. This group thing still has be befuddled. I ask the moderators endulgence untill I get it figured out. For now I resolved the issue myself! Does E14 community have a badge for that?

    /members/christy_2d00_admin  eBay uses a visual editor as well, butt There  no <head> <style> <tags>

    instead they  let you use embedded CSS as in <p style="...."

    I agree that there should be a "last updated" option or "with new comments or replies" option.

    I have also observed that if I have a tracking blocker activated, it does not load sections such as Element14 on Facebook or tweets.

    One other thing I'm not sure if anyone has found, or found helpful - in your Profile, there is a page that is specifically "My Content": image

    That page also has a tabbed widget, similar to the one on the home page, that shows you just your content of various types.

    If this is NOT something you've found, we could/should make it more accessible, link from the home page, etc. If you have found it, but it's not useful, I'd be interested to know what you would prefer to see on it, or how, etc.

    Hi Enrique,

    That's got good potential, but currently content is missing there too. For example, the screenshot below shows the current view in that What's New page, for forum content, however, I know I commented on something yesterday (this forum page) yet it is not visible at the list at the What's New page. In fact, the last entry on the What's New page forum entry is 'Auto Dialer' which was created 6 days ago. For some reason, the listings are of dates created, not dates of last activity. This means all new updates and comments are not visible, from what I can tell. The Created date is not important perhaps, and it is more a 'modified or date of added comment, i.e. last activity' that should be the sort order - just an opinion.

    Hi Cris - thank you for your blunt assessment. As a developer, blunt/direct is my preferred style. Slight smile

    I can appreciate this feels like an Alpha. As I mentioned we had a hard deadline by which we had to deploy due to the previous platform going EOL, and I would have much preferred to have a few more months to do some additional fixing/tweaking. Unfortunately, we didn't have those months and got as much done and in as we could. We also tried to balance not changing things in this platform just to make them the same as the old one because that both leads to much more overhead to maintain/upgrade it, but also there were certainly a lot of things in the old platform that people didn't like - so we left some things "as is" in this platform because we weren't sure if they were truly difficult or we were just used to the old way and had to prioritize what we did and didn't change.

    This (below) is a screen grab of the old platform home page - was there something on this version that provided the bar with your stuff that you are missing now? or was that a complaint on the previous site as well?

    - I will def take your font size comment back to my team. This is something that is standard in this platform so we didn't override it to start with. 

    - Navigation: Compared to the previous version (above), is there something about the previous navigation you preferred or that is missing from the new one? (I know Content is missing). We tried to reclassify/organize the content in the drop downs into categories that actually better matched/explained what the items under each were rather than the "participate/discuss/build" etc from before. Seems like that missed the mark, however, so what would you like/expect to see here instead?

    - The Editor is a version of TinyMCE, which was also used in the previous platform. I think this one works better than the previous one, certainly when it comes to dealing with tables, inserting and resizing images, aligning images with content, etc. I use eBay myself, but I've not paid much attention to the editor - as a buyer vs. seller, I don't often have a lot of reason to. Switching out the base editor in the platform is no small feat as it is used EVERYWHERE, so one of the things we looked for in the new platform was an editor that allowed us to insert our custom buttons/functions to the editor without having to rip it out and replace it wholesale. That being said, i will certainly look at how eBay does theirs and see what we can adopt to make this easier for everyone.

    I will continue to keep an eye on your messages here and will see what of these things we can adjust quickly going forward.

    Thanks for the share.

    I've been in that menu yet skipped over that selection. I think you might have stumbling the best for All Content this new site provides. I'm going to give it a try for the next little while to evaluate. 

    I admit I'm tired of the rock turning exercise I use to feel some level of comfort I'm up to date on site content.
