Site notifications: An idea

cstanton
cstanton over 3 years ago

Verint handles notifications for content very oddly. I know we all have strong opinions about it, and I'd like to try to help this problem with your co-operation and the development team, to create some tools that can help make it easier for us all.

/members-area/support/w/site-faq/27485/how-can-i-receive-notifications-about-comments-forum-threads-blogs-etc

And I'm well aware of both your and my frustrations with them.

As a way to help with this, would it be a good idea to have a section in your profile, to be able to click

"Update so that I receive notifications on all of the <blank> I have created" ?

Where <blank> can be forum threads, blog posts, roadtest reviews, etc.

This would work historically and up to content created when you click the button.

Perhaps it would also allow you to say the opposite, to stop receiving notifications on all of the content?

The idea here is to be able to 'bulk manage' notifications on what you specifically have created, because at the moment you have to individually to it on every item you've created, and you might have a lot of old content or content that you've missed, and you might really like receiving notifications on them. You would still be able to individually go to the content and turn it off for that content in particular.

What do you think?

It would certainly be an improvement.

Am I right in thinking it still wouldn't tell you if someone responds to a comment you made in someone elses thread ?

As the site works now, not unless you enable "reply notifications" for that forum thread.

Perhaps part of this suggestion could be "turn on reply notifications for threads I have replied in"?

Old sweats are getting used to the idea of having to manually register for notifications, but I suspect, and certainly in my case, the vast, vast majority of the time I forget because I've got 20+ years of using forum sites where I don't need to do that.  I'd be prepared so say that literally every forum site not running on Verint does not require a manual register of interest in your own content!

New registrants to E14 must wonder what the heck is going on as tumbleweed blows through their in-box in respect to response to posts because they've got X+ years of using forum sites where they don't need to do that.

Something should happen Chris, and I think there are a number of things wrapped up in this idea:

    1. When I create any content (blog, discussion, poll, whatever), I want to automatically be notified of any comments made against it, at any time into the future.  I don't want to manually register interest in content I have created to get notifications.
    2. For past content I have created, I want to be automatically notified of any comments made against it, at any time into the future, regardless of how long ago the content was created.  I don't want to manually register interest in past content, whether in bulk, e.g. button press, or individually (God forbid!!)  In other words, if a change does happen, the bulk update should just occur as part of the rollout of the release.
    3. For anyone else's content (blog, discussion, poll, whatever), that I comment on, from that point on I want to be automatically notified of any changes - i.e. to the original posting, to existing comments (that, say, someone edits), or new comments made, irrespective of whether or not that comment was a reply to my post on it.  I don't want to have to manually register interest in that item of content to get notifications.
    4. I'm not bothered about any automatic or bulk manual setting to NOT receive notifications - I'm happy to do that manually against the content when I got bored of hearing about it.

Basically, if I create content or comment on content, I'm registering an interest in that item of content and I want to be notified whenever it changes in any manner by automatic default.  I am happy to manually disengage interest in that content when I want.

Further, if not already on the Backlog:

    1. Whenever content is created/changed in any manner, by anyone,I want it to become 'recent content' and appear at the top of the Recent Content list.  It's interesting and useful to see content that is attracting attention irrespective of when it was created.
    2. I want to filter comments in or out of all search results.  My preference would be that, by default, comments were not shown in the search results and the filter has to be selected to show them in the results.

I'm also happy to leave it to developers to say how best to achieve the above as they are much closer to the software architecture of this product.
