Are Projects Like Being Pregnant?

dougw

I've never been pregnant, but I can talk about projects - does any of this sound familiar?

  • You embark on this neat project idea and develop this great plan of how to complete it.
  • Then for every task in the plan that you complete, two more tasks pop up.
  • It starts bogging down and taking too much time so other commitments intrude and cause further delays.
  • You finally get back into it and decide you need to alter the design.
  • This ends up needing more parts, which have to be ordered and take an indeterminate time to arrive.
  • Meanwhile you start working on something else.
  • When you finally get back onto the original project you discover it doesn't actually work so you decide to change the scope, so some of what you already completed becomes useless.
  • You come across some stubborn bug and have to park the project until inspiration strikes again.
  • It is becoming a bit of a drag but you figure you have so much time and money invested you have to carry on.
  • However you motivation is flagging and it drags on very slowly.
  • You finally get close to the finish line and start to wonder why you ever took on such a project.
  • When you do finally complete the project you are very happy and proud of the accomplishment, totally forgetting all the crap you went through on the way.

I'm sure I have left out a bunch of trial and tribulation steps - you will just have to elaborate in the comments below. Relaxed

What are some of the snags that can really derail a project? What was your solution?

Comparing designing a hula-hoop machine to be being pregnant is a very bold comparison. Glad I'm not the only one posting edgy discussion questions. In other news, thanks for the vise advise, its proved…

With that pre-face, the first question would be how to prevent .... projects?

    And cost over-run...

And how about grandkids - the result of projects that take on a life of their own. Relaxed

As a parent and a grandparent, I tell folks that grandkids are the reward for not murdering your own children.
Some folks get super upset with that statement and others... give the knowing "Yup."

Grandkids are the opportunity to be a mentor.  Your kids think you don't know anything.  Your grandkids think you know everything.  It's our chance to be cool again.
