e14 Question of the Month

The next stage of the industrial revolution is Industry 5.0, which adds in how machines should behave and operate alongside humans, environmental and social aspects. What is your opinion of Industry 5.0? Take the poll and in the Comments section, let us know how you think the next evolution of industrial electronics will look.

This whole Industry X thing makes my blood boil. It's only possible to judge revolutions from a reasonable distance in time AFTER they have happened. Giving them names in advance is a new(ish) thing…

Companies should come forward to make people understand what industry 4.0 means and for what is it required? Seems in the beginning there was a lot of talks.....

I guess I should gain an understanding of Industry 1, 2, 3 and 4 before weighing in on Industry 5.0.

This whole Industry X thing makes my blood boil.

It's only possible to judge revolutions from a reasonable distance in time AFTER they have happened.

Giving them names in advance is a new(ish) thing - suits politicians and hype merchants (consulting companies) but has little if any relevance to real stuff.

So as far as I'm concerned:

Different businesses in different places will move at different paces.

It is far from obvious that the next big thing is "how machines should behave and operate alongside humans, environmental and social aspects".

We are very far from agreeing how humans "should behave and operate alongside humans, environmental and social aspects".

So I think we're still working out industry n-1, and this is a premature concern, and probably doesn't require a whole new approach to industry (speaking as someone who was involved in the early years of the Industrial Internet Consortium and pushed for more work on autonomous lights-out factories). Regardless, if I were to respond somewhat flippantly, I'd suggest we'd be better off leaving these mythical machines to determine their own ethics and morals. Humans have been particularly bad (as a group) in developing and adopting these (most don't even understand the difference between them).

Robot controlled factories have been the goal of most industries for a while.

The difference is that the automation technology is finally reaching a level where it just might be able to deliver for certain industries.

The cost of labor and the benefit of a robot that will work 24/7 will eventually decide how fast and how elaborate the take over will be.

I voted 'Other' because I retired ten years ago so I have no idea how my particular industry is dealing with these initiatives. But my answer to the additions in Industry 5 (...how machines should behave and operate alongside humans, environmental and social aspects...) is:

Read and implement Asimov's Three Laws Of Robotics.

Industry 5 isn't even really about industry. It is about people and the planet.

Industries might not voluntarily sacrifice profits for other objectives. It might have to be legislated.

Well in the US that might be considered a "taking". If they want to introduce additional objectives, they should do it the old-fashioned way and buy the company.
