The Art of Electronics is definitely worth buying or picking up from a local library.
Very true - a few years ago I bought a used 2nd Edition from the National Trust second hand bookshop at Wimpole in Cambridgeshire for £3.50. It was so good that I bought the third edition and X chapter add on as soon as they were published (quite a bit more than £3.50)
It's not the only book you'll ever need but it's very useful.

One day you'll have to publish a road test on the X chapters. "Are They Worth The Investment?"
