Confess your impulse purchases!

Fred27

I'm sure everyone is all too familiar with spotting some cool stuff and not being able to resist. I know I'm definitely guilty.

Fess up to the stuff you really shouldn't have bought but did! Let's be honest, the most likely outcome is that some of us will likely join you - but then you'll probably feel less guilty about it.

I haven't been able to pull the trigger as it's not yet available in the UK, but I suspect I won't be able to resist when it does. I don't know exactly why I need a wire EDM machine, but I just feel that…

Last week at our annual local HAM yard sale, I couldn't say 'no' to this one. Was only CAD 10.- ! No idea what to use it for yet …

It is my wife's job to impulse buy. My life's role is strictly limited to funding.

On pure impulse... almost every electronic accessory board - many that have never been built into anything.  Some that I can't even remember what I thought I was going to do with them when I bought them.

I bought the Triplett ET30 Magnetic Field Detector pen because of a converstion here on e14.  THAT was pure impulse.

Another angle grinder ($15).  Pneumatic chisel.  Pneumatic nibbler.  20 cheap multimeters - because they were $2 each.  Chisel carving set.  Vacuum desoldering station.  Halicrafter amateur radio transmitter and receiver set.  Cable winch.  Large helping hands.  100w soldering iron.  Two different types of wrench organizers.  Trim router.  Rotary tool kits (3 or 4 at least).
This is kind of depressing. Laughing

It sounds like healthy fun to me.

Hopefully I am over my addiction to buying multimeters...but I still have urges..

I have multimeters I have never turned on.  Relaxed

My first multimeter didn't even have a rotary switch - the ranges and type of measurement were selected by plugging the positive probe into one of about eight sockets. It was ok for testing fuses, switches, and batteries, including the ones on various motorcycles. One day I accidentally used it to measure the voltage from the dynamo on one bike, but as the regulator was faulty some of the smoke escaped from inside it. Another day I slipped while checking the timing on a magneto, causing it to rotate far faster than I intended. The meter didn't like that either, more smoke gone...

Some weeks later I paid Tandy a visit to buy some more solder, and they had a special offer on some of the multimeters. So on impulse I bought a TMK 500, which served me well for years because I kept it well away from motorcycles. That was over half a century ago and I've still got it.

With the shelf life in mind, I hope the batteries were not included...

Actually batteries generally were included. I just checked a couple of them that were not still in the packaging, but with original batteries. They all are still good and working. The oldest is a Micronta bought around 1974 that I used quite a bit and the original batteries are still going strong. They are Radio Shack Enercell Extra Life batteries.
