Raspberry Pi, Microsoft, and USB Flash Drives (memory devices).

electronicbiker

Hi Guys, ElectronicBiker here, with a problem.

I have a PC, a RISC-PC, and several Raspberry Pi's. Sometimes I need to transfer files between a raspberry Pi and the PC, sometimes back again. The files are usually .TXT or .JPG. Taking a USB memory device out of a Raspberry Pi and plugging it into the PC generates a fault message with the recommendation that I allow windoze to scan and repair the device. I have to allow this to happen, so I do. Most of the time the memory device works on both the PC and the Pi, occasionally it cannot be repaired so windoze does something to it that makes it unusable on any machine.

I know that the Pi runs Linux, which started life some time in the 70's or 80's (I think), I also know that changes are made every so often. Unfortunately I also know that microsoft windoze is the global standard for unfathomable reasons. So why can't a version of the file handling software be created for Linux that works reliably on a windoze machine as well?

Once again, the odd ball... ... I email it to myself - mostly because I'll probably get distracted in moving from one system to another and forget what I was doing. Oh look! Squirrel!

an other option (as mentioned by SensoredHacker0 ) is to use an scp client on your windows PC. Instructions here . After logging in, you 'll get an interface like this, with your PC filesystem(s) left…

it works reliably. You need to use umount.

UNIX started in the 60,s Linux came about  in 1991.
The issue with FS support isnt on the NIX side, MsOS has terrible File System support.

Most NIX system recognize FAT and NTFS readily. MsOS doesnt recognize any FS besides Fat and NTFS, it will try to format any disk with any other formatting.

anyway, its real simple to make a Linux File server. That is what I would do. Setup an ssh server, maybe add an nginx webserver to make browsing files as easy as using any other browser.
with any Nix system or Mac, use connect to server option, you get a GUI drag n drop system supported by your file manager.
Then use the browser to compensate for what MsOS lacks. or use WinSCP to do the exact same thing in MsOS
