e14 Question of the Month

An electronic reference design is a full circuit PCB design for a particular use or application. Some examples of reference designs are DC-DC converter, battery charger, BLDC motor control, gate driver, inverter, and many more. Many manufacturers create reference designs that employ one of their new components or category of components. The element14 Community's parent company, Avnet, Inc., has an extensive library of reference designs called the "Design Hub".  A key benefit of a reference design is that it can not only speed up the design time, but also it can includes a BOM, which saves time sourcing components.

    I might well look at a reference design (if you include the manufacturers data sheet I always look) when designing with a new chip. The PCB CAD data for a reference design is rarely of much use - PCB…

    Reference designs are always useful. The first time using a new chip I often clone at least part of the reference design.

    While the reference layouts are not suitable as-is in a lot of cases, they serve as a good starting point, even if multiple components are different.
