Vintage HiFi maintenance season

Jan Cumps

I have an early 70s receiver that needs some maintenance. The switches and pots have become scratchy again.

It's the second time that I'll be servicing it. The first time I did a full check, and fixed the lights. This time it's just a clean-and-lube of the dials and push buttons.

Compared to your amp, it has no soul. Neat technical achievement though.

    Hello

i would start by spraying switches and pots with DEOXIT D5,

Has this been used on a regular baises, if NOT power it up (with a 100w lamp in series with the ac power input) for few hours.at low volume

if it has noisey transisters in the output stage or tone controls the lamp will stop descruction of output stage

most of the time i found noisey transisters were the small PNP ones

if one channel has more gain than the other when in mono  then start looking for caps in tone and power amp circuit

i think this is only the baby model the big ones had 4 channel for BI wire or external Quad box

if someone wants to start compairing class A or B amps to class D please start another thread

    That's the plan

    > if it has noisey transisters in the output stage or tone controls the lamp will stop descruction of output stage

    It's in daily use

It has no issues except for noisy switches and pots. i serviced it about 10 years ago.

    > i think this is only the baby model the big ones had 4 channel for BI wire or external Quad box

Yes, it was the low power, low budget model of their range at the time.

I have ordered two products that somewhat perform similar effect. I normally have them in stock, but these cannisters don't last when they are half empty.

I'm lucky (or I chose wisely ;) ) that my receiver doesn't have faders.
I haven't had a real good experience with cleaning faders, and have them behave as new. The Deoxit product, and the combination I have above, do a reasonable task. They resolve the scratchiness - and give a somewhat satisfying feel. But never that original smooth ride...

I have a Scott 370R that I bought in 1980. I rewired the ON - OFF switch so it stays ON all the time. I use a switched outlet strip to power the system. All the switches all need hosed down with contact cleaner.  The Scott receiver doesnt have the balls to drive my Bose 601s, so the receiver feeds a 100W a side Carver magnetic amplifier. I noticed the highs dont seem as bright lately, most likely its my hearing that is degrading.

It's virtually the same as the one I ordered:

    KONTAKT 61

    Lubricants

Long life for new or cleaned contacts.

A special cleaning, lubricating and anti-corrosive agent designed for contacts and electromechanical moving parts, which have been cleaned using KONTAKT 60. KONTAKT 61 provides a high degree of protection against corrosion and its microscopically thin protective film guarantees a high degree of contact. Furthermore, KONTAKT 61 prevents abrasion and seizing of contact strips and rails.

    Features:

    + Neutral active product.

+ Does not cause or promote leakage currents.

    + Has a distinct anti-corrosive effect.

    + Is a first-class lubricant.

+ Mechanical abrasion between contact surfaces is greatly reduced and the life of connecting surfaces correspondingly increased if oxides are first dissolved using KONTAKT 60 and then rinsed with KONTAKT WL.  Finally, the cleaned contact is protected by KONTAKT 61.
