Vintage HiFi maintenance season

I have an early 70s receiver that needs some maintenance. The switches and pots have become scratchy again.

It's the second time that I'll be servicing it. The first time I did a full check, and fixed the lights. This time it's just a clean-and-lube of the dials and push buttons.

Hi Anniel747, ElectronicBiker here. I decided to find out what the difference is between WD40 and WD40 Specialist. Turns out there are several versions of WD40 Specialist, all to do with specialist cleaning and lubrication of various items. Many include prevention of rust; the Contact Cleaner variant includes fast drying amongst other things. There's one WD40 that includes deep penetrant additives for freeing rusty nuts and bolts etc. So it's a case of horses for courses. I wouldn't use the extreme types on delicate electronics, especially the ones that penetrate, as it might be tricky keeping it away from things you don't want penetrating such as resistor bodies via the holes where the wires go in.

We used to refer to 'ordinary' WD40 as penetrating oil, contact cleaner, rust preventer etc, depending on the job in hand. There was another make of contact cleaner years ago that was based on isopropyl alcohol; we stopped using it shortly after somebody said it was a carcinogenic.

I hadn't realised until now that there were so many versions, so thanks for that!

Thaks for that, I did think at the time that 'wax' and 'quick-drying' don't seem to go together, but I'll bear it in mind...
