Vintage HiFi maintenance season

I have an early 70s receiver that needs some maintenance. The switches and pots have become scratchy again.

It's the second time that I'll be servicing it. The first time I did a full check, and fixed the lights. This time it's just a clean-and-lube of the dials and push buttons.

I recently bought class-d amp based on the TPA3116, runs on a dollar store power bank, or higher power usb-c PD adapter. https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tpa3116d2.pdf Compared to your amp, it has…

It's virtually the same as the one I ordered: KONTAKT 61 Lubricants Long life for new or cleaned contacts. A special cleaning, lubricating and anti-corrosive agent designed for contacts and electromechanical…

The funny part is that a can of either product costs more than what I paid for the receiver Slight smile

    Work done. The cans arrived:

Cleaner left, lubricant right. I was able to reach all gizmos after removing the bottom plate. The tone controls weren't easy. They sit on a PCB and not a lot wiggle room to poke inside. All others are either exposed, or have an easy vector of attack.

Before putting all back on its place, I ran a smoke test, and the result is good. Cracks and finicky contacts are resolved. I took advantage of having the shelves away from the wall, to tidy up cabling. All good for another 10 years.

Hi Anniel747, ElectronicBiker here. I decided to find out what the difference is between WD40 and WD40 Specialist. Turns out there are several versions of WD40 Specialist, all to do with specialist cleaning and lubrication of various items. Many include prevention of rust; the Contact Cleaner variant includes fast drying amongst other things. There's one WD40 that includes deep penetrant additives for freeing rusty nuts and bolts etc. So it's a case of horses for courses. I wouldn't use the extreme types on delicate electronics, especially the ones that penetrate, as it might be tricky keeping it away from things you don't want penetrating such as resistor bodies via the holes where the wires go in.

We used to refer to 'ordinary' WD40 as penetrating oil, contact cleaner, rust preventer etc, depending on the job in hand. There was another make of contact cleaner years ago that was based on isopropyl alcohol; we stopped using it shortly after somebody said it was a carcinogenic.

I hadn't realised until now that there were so many versions, so thanks for that!

That looks like a very nice vintage tape recorder. I thought it was a Truvox at first until I magnified it. I had a stereo Sony 'Tapecorder' TC-something back in the day but despite (alledgedly) having ferrite record and play heads one of the playback heads wore out. I used to amuse my two sons by threading a loop of tape through it, similar to a Watkins 'Copy-Cat' but not as good.

I now have a Philips 4-speed stereo tape recorder to revive but the head cover (roughly triangular Philips 'cream' colour) seems to have been glued onto the metal top plate with a very effective glue. I have tried squeezing it in the same way as the ones on a Philips EL3527 (I think...) but it doesn't squeeze and I don't want to break it. Unless I have another one ready to slot in of course.

Thaks for that, I did think at the time that 'wax' and 'quick-drying' don't seem to go together, but I'll bear it in mind...
