A friend of mine had a single-jawed version of a pair of pliers, he called it a plier. It was still useful as a miniature crowbar
0.25" magnetic recording tape. I enjoy attempting to restore old tape recorders. I had a pocket wire recorder once, after a series of failed attempts to repair it I threw it away. I bet it would be worth millions of pounds today if I'd kept it.
A niche tool, tweezer cutters, nice for fine magnet wire

The answer will always depend upon what you are doing or building.
Each tool made an impact when they became available.
Each tool was created to fill a need as perceived by those who needed to use it.
New tools will be created in the future and old tools will fall into non-use as better tools arrive.
