QUESTION OF THE MONTH : What Soldering tool would you like next to add to your Workbench?

e14 Question of the Month

Soldering components is a necessary skill for any prototyping maker or engineer. But the right soldering tool you need depends on what you are going to do. A standard soldering station may work for soldering through-hole components to a PCB, but soldering surface mount devices needs a different tool. What are you thinking about purchasing next?

shabaz I like the idea of try before you buy. I used a Project14 prize cart to pick up a desoldering gun. Unless I'm "harvesting", I default to soldering wick or the pencil/solder sucker combo tool. The…

I might like a fast heating iron/station. Mine take a while to heat up. I might use a reflow oven once in a while if I had one.

I think you’d have to have the right soldering iron as well.  That wouldn’t work on mine but it’s still good to know that this thing exists.

I don’t believe so.  Mine is this one: https://hakko.co.uk/product/fx-888d-digital-soldering-station-silver/ (actually blue/yellow version)

Andrew J I never really investigated Hakko, tried a few and never found them worthwhile.

I built a soldering station with a microscope and web camera attachment for soldering nano probes in the lab.  It's very useful for the tiny stuff, although it takes up a whole benchtop.  I'm using the JBC soldering station on it.

Good idea, however, I think the copper wires oxide after a while and the solder doesn't stick as well.  Could probably dip them in an acid bath and re-flux it also - easier just to buy a new roll.

No.  I used the paste still.  I can certainly give it another try.

The JBC is great, but the JBC tips are expensive.  I've seen replacement tips for 1/10 the price, but I'm a little afraid to use them.  Has anyone tried the aftermarket tips?

I've accidentally tried a low-cost tip (it came with a portable USB-C powered soldering iron) with a genuine JBC station, and, maybe it's coincidence, but I experienced a failure of the station eventually. Admittedly it was an old JBC station, and maybe the failure was unrelated.
Anyway, I've made sure never to accidentally mix the tips with the new JBC station I purchased last year.

As you say, the JBC tips are expensive : ( however I run them at a reasonably temperature (330 deg C) and with the auto-tip-cooldown, the tips have lasted a decade for me.
