Pure Mathematics does not know there is a Universe. Physics studies our Universe.

Physics is the study of matter.  I would think that math evolved in the attempts to prove physics.

Physics evolved through observation and thought.

    Next came physical measurements.

Math was developed to explain what was happening during the observations that supported the measurements.

The study of matter in physics drove the growth of mathematics, as people sought ways to describe and validate what they observed.

I think physics is an application area of math in the same manner that statistics is.  I also suspect that math didn't have its roots with physics at all but instead initially evolved out of the needs to manage commerce, resource planning and construction projects... so civics instead of physics.

Math is what I struggled at in the school. Physics was how I demonstrated I struggled with math.

How I found a career in electronics, then systems administration, computer engineering and finally IT security is beyond me. I recall my first electronic theory class in college. I thought AC/DC was a person who went both ways. The students sitting next to me laughed and said, didn't you dabble in electronics before you came here. Nada, never, none. I was in college because my guardian said it would be good for me.

Humans forst discovered motion, symmetry, oscillation and then change which laid foundation to maths, it's tough
