What are your Tech, Engineering and IoT Predictions for 2019?

rscasny
rscasny over 7 years ago

EVERYBODY is predicting something these days. Some are predicting the stock market will go up, and there are others who say it will go down. There are AI predictions for 2019.image

image

There are of course American Superbowl predictions (visualize The Chicago Bears, please).

There are predictions about the Oscars (Best Picture, Actor, Actress, etc).

There are weather predictions. There are workplace predictions.

There are Hotel predictions.

There are even ANIMAL HOROSCOPE predictions (I guess for all the cat lovers in the world).

The element14 team wanted to get in on the fun of predictions for 2019. We thought you would too.

So, here's the question: What are your tech, engineering and/or IoT predictions for 2019?

Now, this covers a lot of ground.

So, let me help you get started.

You could answer this question in terms of:

Big Thingsimage

  • Transportation
  • Energy
  • Manufacturing
  • Telecom
  • Food
  • Housewares
  • Materials
  • Pure Science

Or, you could answer the questions in terms of:

image

Tech Buzz

  • Anything Smart
  • Autonomous
  • AI
  • Robots
  • Drones

Or, you could answer the question in terms of:

Technologyimage

  • Wireless Connectivity
  • Embedded Engineering
  • Internet of Things
  • Industrial Automation
  • Anything electronic that's Smaller than your Thumbnail

So, give me all you got!

Show me your Tech and engineering Crystal Ball.

Make me believe you have an eye into the future!

Please leave your comments below

Sincerely,

Randall

I know I created this discussion for the community, but I really cannot resist offering my one prediction for 2019:

2019 will be a renaissance in space travel and innovation.

Okay, the chinese are going to the dark side of the moon, with signals relayed back to earth via a satellite, I believe.

Space X seems to be doing pretty good even though Elon Musk had a tough year; he clearly does not like the SEC and the 20 million fine they slapped on him)

Nevertheless, the probe that just landed on the Mars is a step up for roboticized vehicles. We may never be satisfied that we have found or not found the "real" Martians (instead of my favorite Martian thanks to TV), but I think the science and engineering around autonomus/semi-autonomous vehicles will be great experience when we finally land something somewhere out of the solar system.

The one thing I predict that probably will not happen is a much more powerful and faster rocket. So far what anyone has is too slow to really do space travel.

.....unless Dr. Cochran is real and submits a patent for a true Warp engine!

I suspect the marketing people will continue to 'polish t..s' and try to tell people it's everything they need.

There will be more automation of things we do for ourselves and this includes in vehicles.

Sadly the auomation will remove the understanding for why it was implemented and there will be consequences (eg ABS braking and ice)

Other uses for cellphones will continue to evolve. NFC to pay for things is one currently, but there will be other uses in identification.

IoT will eventually get the security it needs as consumers fight back against the security issues that keep popping up.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology will develop and (hopefully) will replace battery cars/trucks. (Charging cars is the issue and will grow as more come on the market)

Drones delivering packages will be seen as inefficient and dangerous, so law makers will have to take action.

Solar panels will become cheaper and while less efficent the price will make them cost effective.

Regardless of 2019 ... I think many here have seen the biggest advances in technolgy.

We've gone from calculators to computers and now the internet and streaming movies, ordering parts, sharing files and communication.

Video phone calls that were science fiction are available anywhere with skype and other apps.

Vehicles have gone from something you hoped would get you there, to something you don't touch and has more creature comforts than you thought possible, and costs less to buy and run.

Electronics now has more computing power than the early space days, costs less than a coffee and fits in a space that was unimaginable in the 60's.

    For 2019,

    1) Component shortage will ease off a bit

    2) ARM cores will start to lose traction as the full impact and extent of Chinese ownership and control start to bite

    3) Microsoft will announce extension to Windows 7 support

    4) The media will start to recognise that AI has yet to be implemented, and that there are serious limits to the pattern recognition systems currently touted as AI

    5) No fully autonomous vehicles will be available to buy.

    6) Block- chain will drop off  the hype curve https://www.ciodive.com/news/gartner-serves-up-2018-hype-cycle-with-a-heavy-side-of-ai/530385/

I can see distributed apps, using block chain, taking off more. (it's not just for crypto currency, that use is just very lucrative right now)

Distributed social might get some traction in 2019. Maybe giving Facebook some discomfort.

But mostly, I can't help but wonder how block chain technology can add a layer of trust and security to IoT devices. Maybe 2019 is still too early for that.

In terms of hardware I'm hoping for better energy storage solutions to appear! Super capacitors with nano-carbon tech look really promising, but super pricey still.

    Cheers,

    -Nico

Wearables are still looking for useful things to do before they really take off. I think they need to not just look for new applications, but help us do things we already do but may have trouble with, like recognize people we are supposed to know, or read things we can't quite see or automatically record stuff we should remember, or automatically act as a universal translator.

Big companies are developing programming languages to teach children. I hope they realize there is a huge market for languages for computer-illiterate people to program their own IoT devices. Trained programmers will be the bottle neck in IoT build-out.

Medical knowledge is getting closer to a tipping point where we will start to be able to solve the tough problems. I don't know when the breakthoughs will happen, but I expect baby-boomers to start pouring their wealth into medical research as they get older and there will be a need for more and more technology in the medical field.

LoRa is opening up some applications and there is investment happening, but Bluetooth 5 will have many more applications.

I think next year will be great for element14 as the staff are not content with a static forum but are diligently exploring new ways to improve the forum and those efforts are bound to grow the forum. They also have an excellent staff who are steadily tuning the existing programs to make them more effective.

More autonomous vehicles will continue to be developed and continue to make the news until the idea is no longer surprising and autonomous vehicles start to appear on the streets.

There will be an ever increasing adoption of exoskeletons in the workplace to assist workers.

Increasing use of robots is old news so it isn't much of a prediction, but maybe it will become affordable enough to be more widely used for assisted living for seniors.

I expect a lot more drone legislation and probably licensing as people start to use them in more applications. I don't know when you will see the first beer fridge that comes with a drone to deliver drinks to the owner, but full taxi drones are just waiting for legislation to obtain permits to operate.

The past few years have seen an enormous investment in localization technology (knowing where every cell phone is - with and without GPS) I expect to see an increasing number of apps trying to generate value from these technologies. At some point someone will come up with a killer app that will make it acceptable for most people to like it/use it. Then hopefully the rest of us will get to use it in non-cell phone applications.

Another technology that has seen a lot of big companies dabbling in it is heads-up displays. The technology for good augmented reality is still a year or two away, but investment in heads-up display technology will increase until it finally takes off.

I wrote more but realized it was too long so expect more installments...
