COMPACT in his own words:image

I am a 35 year veteran of the Electronics and Information Technology industries and a strong advocate of "Hands-on" and commonsense approaches for engineering education.

My experience includes many disciplines and fields with the focus on the design, development, production and integration of high quality practical, reliable and resilient products and systems some of which have now become ubiquitous and a part of 21st Century life (such as Computers, Laser Printers, Networking, Graphics and Multimedia).

I was first involved in electronics in the 1960's where as a tiny tot I removed all of the valves (tubes) from a black and white television set.

I then soon discovered that when I connected a thin wire between the two power point sockets and turned the switch on that the wire's insulation melts, the wire glows red and a flame would appear.

From that point I had a very healthy respect for electricity and safety.

My first involvement with integrated circuits and semiconductors was in the mid 1970's when I built my first electronic project - a TV Table Tennis Game.

At the time I had no idea how the integrated circuits worked but I did discover that I was a natural at soldering, case construction and assembly. It worked first go!

Just after commencing High School, I built a Z80 based S-100 computer. It originally started off with all of 2K of RAM and then over the years was expanded to run CP/M with Floppy Disk Drives and a range of interesting peripherals including a high resolution graphics card, joysticks, speech and sound synthesisers. This computer still works today as a testament to its build quality.  From this my skills were noticed and I was offered a part time job repairing computer boards and selling electronic components. This job soon became a product creation and development role where I worked on exciting new products both hardware and software.

I've maintained this role ever since initially for several major technology organisations and then becoming self-employed, consulting to large corporate organisations and private clients.
