Year in review 2024

I've not been that active on Element14 the last year due to working on fixing up the new house.

Have found some "shocking" electrics such as this socket which was live but the loose wire was not.

So the socket tester go a good work out and I also got a small live wire detector for checking cables. There were also some really old sockets that I swapped out with newer ones. The loft had some interesting single wire cabling which are likely from the original installation. There is also a broken fluid based solar array on the roof and a selection of part decommissioned tanks and pipes. So will be a slow job to strip these out.

For the major electrical work, I got in an electrician who for example moved a light switch in the hall which in turn allowed us to replace the front door. He also fitted an outside light which required some really long drill bits. I've learnt plastering and covered up the chasing that was needed for the new cables.

The workshop electrics are a mess and need ripping out, I've started on that so currently running power tools in the workshop requires an extension from the studio. The studio is ok for electrics but needs a new work bench. I've bought one and am painting the boards so they don't get moist or mouldy. Otherwise that's pretty much set up.

I have done a bit of project work and I'm working on a rugged computer. That consists of an old ammo box which I am modifying to make the lid higher to fit a monitor, and the box will have a drawer for a keyboard and joystick.

I've been researching HID devices and also USB power which was more complex than I expected. Once the metal work is complete I'll be shooting some videos of the electronics.

So 2025 should see some interesting projects. Watch this space.

Yes, house renovation can be a challenge.

I still find things the previous owner did to my house that I bought 38 years ago.
