Atmel SAMA5D4 Xplained Ultra Road Test -- Days 4, 5, and 6

3 Mar 2015

Over the last three days I've set up a virtual machine (VirtualBox) running Ubuntu 14.04LTS, pulled the Yocto/Poky source, and created the build environment using the instructions listed at PokyBuild < Linux4SAM < TWiki.  All of this went surprisingly well with no hitches.  However, I did find that the build went a lot faster once I allowed the virtual machine to use eight cores instead of one!  I created all three images as well as Atmel Poky QT-embedded SDK.

From there I went on to compile a simple "Hello World" application using the cross compiler from above.  However at this point, I'm unsure how to get this newly created application into one of the images to transfer over to the target.  That will be my goal for tomorrow.

Here's a list of some links I found helpful during this process:

    Nicolas noglitch,

Is the Atmel Poky QT-embedded SDK that I built above the equivalent of ADT described in the Yocto documentation?  Can I use Yocto ADT and the Eclipse plug-in to develop and/deploy an application on the Atmel SAMA5D4 Xplained Ultra board?

You have several ways to load your newly created application in the running system.

    1/ download the application

You can download the executable file in the filesystem of your target.

    - using serial line (yes, it can be handy with tiny files): you can use the rz/sz zmodem protocol: only your serial console is needed: no additional cable!

    - using a mass storage volume: USB key or SD card. This is easy, you copy a file from your development host, remove the volume, mount the volume on your board and run the application. It can become annoying if the development cycle gets long...

    - using the network: you have many choices but the obvious ones are ssh/scp or rsync once you have a set a IP address to your Ethernet port

    2/ run the application remotely

This is the beauty of embedded Linux systems: you can use your network to mount a remote NFS volume on your target. No download cycle anymore: you develop, compile and run just like if you were on your regular machine. A little bit of setup is needed though.
