Difficult upgrade...

AnalogNotes
AnalogNotes
14 Dec 2012

OK, so I just spent the almost six hundred bucks to upgrade to version 6 of EAGLE.  It doesn't work on OS X 10.5.8.  Every time I try to start it, it just crashes.  I didn't think about my OS version at first, so I kept trying to launch the dern thing with no luck.  I found a line in a file saying that EAGLE 6 works with OS X 10.6 and 10.7, so I'm assuming that is the problem.  Why doesn't the installer check the OS version?  Why doesn't the app check the OS version and display a dialog instead of just crashing?

After that, I tried to run EAGLE on my RedHat Linux box, but all I get there is a crash with a libXrender error.  [sarcasm]Wonderful![/sarcasm]

So, I figured that I would post here in the forum and see if anyone else had a similar problem.  Apparently, I have no permission to create my own post in any forum here.  I can create blog posts and I can reply to other people, but I can't create my own topic in any forum.  WTF?  [Insert rant about this being 2012 and how web accessibility is important and how online communities are a real key to a product's success.  For example, read "Designing for the Social Web"...]  I had been able to create a post at one time (see http://www.element14.com/community/thread/20941?tstart=0 ), but now there is nothing.  (FWIW, I'm using Firefox 17.0.1 with NoScript and I have set "Allow all this page".)

This sucks.

Funny, I wouldn't actually have minded the crashing if I could have asked here about it, but having it not work and then not being able to post just makes me think I shouldn't have upgraded and I shouldn't be here.

EDIT: I changed the topic from "Element14 really seems to suck." to "Difficult upgrade...".  I'm much less upset about the whole thing.  The forum seems to be working now, and Richard seems to be checking out the EAGLE problem.

Thanks Dave.  Now I just need to get past my disappointment about this upgrade thing.

Yep, that's me, 53 year old 6'5" white guy, new haircut.  (Used to have a pony tail down to my waist.  Gets a little hot in the summer with it here in Tucson though...)

I'm running RedHat Enterprise Linux 6.3 workstation.

At this point, I'm in a bit of a quandry.  My primary system at home is the Mac (the Linux and PC systems are at the day job), and I'm not ready just yet to upgrade past 10.5.8.  I can't upgrade it very far anyway, since it is one of the first Intel-based Macs.  (Found out I can't use it to do app development for my ipad either.  Sigh...)  Anyway, I blew all my available cash on the EAGLE upgrade, so I've got a chicken and egg thing going and can't afford to buy a new computer right now.  Not that it matters much at this point, but I'm absolutely disgusted with Apple's business practices and will probably switch to Windows too.

The main reason I wanted to upgrade EAGLE is that I'm a python programmer by trade and I could have fun directly manipulating the XML.  It was a discretionary purchase and I just can't afford to do all the rest of the things that need to be done to get it working.  EAGLE 6 is absolutely not a requirement for the boards I design.

Bottom line, I'm really thinking the only option is to stay with 5.12...

    Regards,

    Doug

P.S. While you're talking to your developers, ask them how long the directory paths can be and how large is the buffer that a ULP hands to the exit() command.  My 5.12 EAGLE has been crashing lately (never did before at all) and the thing I've changed is my ULP path is longer.  I can easily crash EAGLE by handing too large a script to the exit() command, so I now write out a text file and then call exit("script scriptfile") and that works fine...

    Hi Doug,

It's nice to be able to associate a face with the name and voice. What version of Red Hat are you using there are a couple of libraries that I can send to you directly to be able to take care of this. I will also note the issue to our developers to see if an OS version check can be implemented to avoid the confusion.

Please let me know what else I can do to help you out.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

Thanks Doug, this is helpful, I will see what is going on. In the meantime we forwarded your EAGLE question over to one of our experts to see if we can't find an answer for you. We very much appreciate you being apart of the community and for letting us know when something is not working as it should.
