Difficult upgrade...

OK, so I just spent the almost six hundred bucks to upgrade to version 6 of EAGLE.  It doesn't work on OS X 10.5.8.  Every time I try to start it, it just crashes.  I didn't think about my OS version at first, so I kept trying to launch the dern thing with no luck.  I found a line in a file saying that EAGLE 6 works with OS X 10.6 and 10.7, so I'm assuming that is the problem.  Why doesn't the installer check the OS version?  Why doesn't the app check the OS version and display a dialog instead of just crashing?

 

After that, I tried to run EAGLE on my RedHat Linux box, but all I get there is a crash with a libXrender error.  [sarcasm]Wonderful![/sarcasm]

 

So, I figured that I would post here in the forum and see if anyone else had a similar problem.  Apparently, I have no permission to create my own post in any forum here.  I can create blog posts and I can reply to other people, but I can't create my own topic in any forum.  WTF?  [Insert rant about this being 2012 and how web accessibility is important and how online communities are a real key to a product's success.  For example, read "Designing for the Social Web"...]  I had been able to create a post at one time (see http://www.element14.com/community/thread/20941?tstart=0 ), but now there is nothing.  (FWIW, I'm using Firefox 17.0.1 with NoScript and I have set "Allow all this page".)

 

This sucks.

 

Funny, I wouldn't actually have minded the crashing if I could have asked here about it, but having it not work and then not being able to post just makes me think I shouldn't have upgraded and I shouldn't be here.

 

EDIT: I changed the topic from "Element14 really seems to suck." to "Difficult upgrade...".  I'm much less upset about the whole thing.  The forum seems to be working now, and Richard seems to be checking out the EAGLE problem.

    OK, first, there is no "submit topic" button.  When I look at a particular forum, say the one I already posted in once, there is a link on the top right that says:

     

    "Click here to join in the discussion"

     

    If I click on that, I get two pink error boxes:

     

    You do not have permission to post in this area. You may need to join the Group first.

    and:

     

    It appears you're not allowed to view what you requested. You might contact your administrator if you think this is a mistake.

    On some web pages, that "Join the discussion" is a drop down box where I can choose among the various topics (Announcements, Beta Testing, etc.) and then click a "Join" button.  They all fail with the same two pink message boxes.  I tried this from both the desktop computer and my iPad with the same results.

    P.S. Even this edit box sucks.  Hmm, I see the "HTML" button on the top right, let's see if I can format this more properly by editing the HTML directly.  Oy vey, what are all these <DIV> tags???  Well, at least I can edit this, I can't edit the post I made in the suggestion forum...

    I am sorry that you are having issues creating a topic. Are you getting any error messages when you are submitting a topic?
