ICL8038 waveform generator

The ICL8038 waveform generator is a monolithic integrated circuit capable of producing high accuracy sine, square, triangular, sawtooth and pulse waveforms with a minimum of external components. The frequency (or repetition rate) can be selected externally from 0.001Hz to more than 300kHz using either resistors or capacitors, and frequency modulation and sweeping can be accomplished with an external voltage.(Datasheet ICL8038)...Obsolete product but  only use for students

Internal diagram of the oscillator

According to the data sheet can be used with two power supplies and a single power supply.

In my application Use only one power supply (12V), consumption of integrated circuit is very low (less than 20mA)

I like it. Everyone needs a simple waveform generator now and then. It looks like you have a good one. DAB

Hi Martin, Analog Devices make waveform synthesis chips AD5932 and AD5930. They are modern digitally controlled chips. I've never used one but they are worth a look, if you want to check out an Arduino…

Farnell stock the AD5930, if you have an account, or I think you can use a credit card. Peter

AD5930 is an interesting device, I wasn't aware of such a device also has a high operating frequency; i'll try to find it in my country, thanks for the info

thank you very much for the link and it really is a shame that this chip is out of service, I see really useful in many ways, I hope to have a more modern version, will inquire a little about their new versions image

    Regards

    Hi Martin,

I was first introduced to the ICL8038 chip by an Excellent on line tutorial site "Electronic Tutorials"

    http://www.electronics-tutorials.ws/waveforms/waveforms.html

It is a shame that this chip is out of production as it is very flexible and fun to work with. You did a very nice job making a board and demonstrating it. Thanks for the great post.
