It's Time for some 'Electrical Engineering'

27 Feb 2020

I'll come clean, despite studying Electrical & Electronic Engineering (I don't think you could do just Electronic Engineering in those days) I never liked the Electrical bit. I'm not happy messing about with invisible stuff that can kill you. One mistake and puff - you're gone. I know from experience - I've made one mistake - and puff, I was the other side of the room and all the lights had gone out. Luckily still around to learn to be more careful.

Still, there comes a time when you just have to grasp the nettle and today my new electric cooker came and now it is time to put away the robots and wire it in. Hopefully nothing will blow up and I'll be able to make the fish, chips and peas scheduled for tonight's dinner.

Lucky you.  Last night I got a call from my daughter-in-law saying that she had water pouring out of their dishwasher.  So, this morning I went over to check it out.  To start with let me just say that I hate Plumbing!  I was able to quickly narrow down the problem to the drain pump (she had already address the drain filters and a few other issues).  I removed the pump and managed to disassemble it enough to find some debris inside the pump housing (the impeller would rotate, but felt a little sticky).  I reassembled the unit and ran a quick test, a short fill followed by a drain process.  Wow! The pump worked.... for a while and then stopped.  These days no one seems to have any local stock, with a lot of internet places quoting 1 to 2 weeks for delivery.

After cleaning up all of the water off the floors (I tried a couple of times to fill and drain the unit, and with the multiple removals of the pump, lots of water kept dumping out on to the floor) and tidying up, I returned the unit back into its hole (at least mostly) and I promised to rush back over when the new part arrives.  Did I mention that I hate plumbing?

Domestic appliance repairs related with water are never fun! : (

it looks like we're all repairing stuff this week. I've got some commercial air-con board to fix for a friend, because the electrician wired up the three phase connections wrong.. how he wasn't fired for that I don't know.

Blown fuses, shorted diodes, about-to-pop 400V electrolytic, etc... no idea if it will work, so it is a 'best effort' fix.. I've no desire to test it : )

EDIT: since we all like looking at hardware image :

(appears stretched on my screen, but clicking on the image makes it appear correctly, don't know why):

    Shabaz,

You know what they say, 'If at first you don't succeed, try, try again'. I have another version, 'If at first you don't succeed just give up, have a cup of tea (or coffee), sit in the sun for a bit and it will all go away'.

    Hi Gene,

I often wonder with all the difficulty keeping dishwashers from leaking water, how do they ever keep the International Space Station from Leaking Air?

    Hi John,

And don't get me started on washing machines....  One appliance that I insist on having (and now so does my son) is a good water filtration system.  My preference is Reverse Osmosis.  When they work, they are great, but these things can turn into a lawn sprinkler under (and above) your sink so quickly.

    Hi Gene,

Sounds like you should build an automatic water mains shut off like I did.

    https://www.element14.com/community/people/jw0752/blog/2016/07/12/automatic-water-shut-off-system-for-home-chapter-5-final-demo

It was a multi part blog and this link is just the final demo but it includes the previous links. I was always concerned that when I was away from home for a vacation or trip one of the appliances or pipes would burst and flood my home. This system has been installed now for s few years and it has save me a couple of times. Once we started filling the laundry tub in the laundry room and then stepped away to do a quick chore, forgot about the sink and it over flowed. The system caught the spill in its early stages and shut off the water to the house. A wet dry vac quickly cleaned up the relatively minor over flow. Even the sensors are simple and made in the shop. I have also found them to be reusable. I simply dry them with a hair dryer and put them back in service.
