openPicus Flyport WIFI

I have tried to develop an application using the MRF24WB0MA Wifi module from Microchip. I had no problem building a board, however, I had huge problems unravelling code for the TCP/IP stack.

All code provided by Microchip is intended to be used in conjunction with the relevant daughter boards, and development kits, such as the PIC18 Explorer kit. After looking on the internet for some sample code, or a similar project that I could adapt, I found openPicus Flyport!

I could not afford to purchase a Flyport Wifi module for myself, and had all components needed to create one, schematics are freely available for download. Therefore I have attempted to build one myself.

This blog will contain details on the build of a prototype and relevant test and development notes.

I have fixed the printing problem, so the circuit could now be completed. I have purchased a lot of 47 sheets of HP Premium Inkjet transparencies on Ebay.

The difference in finish between the HP and previously used Ryman Inkjet Transparencies is astonishing. I am using a Canon MP270 Inkjet printer with Standard / High quality / Plain Paper setting, and the results are excellent for very fine pitch IC's. So far I have managed to create a board that has a 132 pin Hirose connector, with 0.254mm traces connecting to it.

The question now is, is it worth the effort? I think I would be wise to research wireless modules again, see if there are any new products out there.

I am a little disapointed with Microchip for not making more effort with their wireless modules, does anyone else feel the same?

Nice looking board! I'm trying to recall - is that particular connector used in order to connect to the PIC24 dev board?

Hi Drew

Yes, it is the (Hirose)-FX10A-120S/12-SV(71) - Receptacle(Hirose)-FX10A-120S/12-SV(71) - Receptacle, The PIC24EP512GU810-I/PFPIC24EP512GU810-I/PF USB Starter Kit connects to it, there is also a MRF24WB0MA wifi module on the back of the board, the other 8 pin molex is for a temp sensor circuit I made using a TCN75 sensor. The connector was quite easy to work with, which was a surprise as I had doubts that the circuit traces would etch properly, with the limited system I use at home.

Hi Drew

The MRF24WB0MA is very easy to solder, it has been on and off a few boards now! I usually put a little card underneath it and remove after soldering, that way I get a tiny air gap, and then when I wash and rebake the board it dries out properly. In the past I have had issues with it when not using the card.
