The Chicken Coop Project

wymand

9 Feb 2014

I live on the side of Tiger Mountain in the Issaquah alps.  We keep chickens but there are a lot of predators in the woods so they are caged in.  But I still need to watch them.  I currently use a fixed IR in the coop and another PT  ip camera  outside.  I am making a controller and have drawings in Google Sketch-Up.  image

Hopefully more is to come.

It is great to define needs however be prepared modify them as things progress.

    Also expect roadblocks to overcome.

Yes indeed, define your needs before you design.

You might want to look at the projects where they added the RPi Camera to an RPi over wifi.

Essentially they would get you the ability to monitor anything via remote.

If you add an X and Y motor set, you could then pan around to cover the entire area of concern.

Nice!  I am a little obsessed with watching my chickens, I have a grand idea in my head about a Coop Nanny that would monitor, record (livestream?), send me heat warnings and possibly keep weather data such as daylight hours, temperature, etc.  It would be awesome to have the Nanny send me an alert if there is night activity (predators)...  Seems like a good time for me to get this down in a requirements doc, right?
