Tools for MakerSpace

What tools would you consider a must for a viable makerspace?

  • These are all good comments! I have several friends who know way more about big tools than I do and I am sure they would be happy to get me up to speed on how to use the tools.

    Hi Blake,

    A good place to start is with what you yourself are interested in. Tool the space for that application and then add as you find demand. Most people will not loose interest if they know you are working on setting things up. If you aren't already familiar with some of the more sophisticated tools it will be important for you to come up to speed on them so you can teach others and protect them and the tools from damage. If you have a target group of people you might put out a survey to see what the local interests are.

    Maybe good to check existing makerspace websites, some have online lists of what they have.

    Maybe even call some to discuss.

    It might be good to have tools that individuals might not already own due to cost.

    I imagine it is different buying for a makerspace than for oneself, especially if equipment

    might be misused. So ease of use, access to training, ease of repair and maintainability,

    safety etc all come into play for your decisions.

    Soldering and rework tools,

    Testing tools,

    Power source,

    All possible dev boards with all possible shields and daughter boards,

    BLE, WiFi dev boards and tools, maybe all RF related from short range to long range,

    3D printer,

    Laser cutter,

    Desktop PCB etching for prototype development,

    CNC tools,

    All possible component stock including passive and active,

    All possible MCUs and MPUs,

    Quick access to companies for samples with vast network,

    ... ... ... and much more...

     

    Sorry if it sound ultimate maker space and expensive, but, by this setup, innovation is very POSSIBLE... image
