Raspberry Pi Thermal Video

25 Aug 2013

My mate's Raspberry PI is somewhat faulty and crashes once it gets warm or the likes

so I decided to use my FLIR i7(new toy spoiler image)  to video it during booting XBMC,

then again playing some videos off the USB stick. note that during all of this the USB/NIC

chip actually is hotter than the CPU/GPU doing all the heavy lifting ...very odd!

They just announced a new heat sink:

    http://www.element14.com/community//docs/DOC-55389/l/stop-your-raspberry-pi-from-overheating-with-the-new-heatsink-from-element14

but apparently it's only for the cpu, not the USB/NIC.

Thanks for the information.I sell heatsinks and the linke on my Ebay site ...They do work quite well and even keep this unit more reliable but in fact this RPI dies regardless when the NIC just fails image

    John

    Thats a great video.

It has helped to reassure me that there should be enough heat to help de-freeze my camera, and that I should keep the camera close to the USB/NIC chip area.

I seem to recall a batch had issue with this chip overheating ... it may be one of them.

I seem to recall a batch had issue with this chip overheating ... it may be one of them.

It was the rev 1 boards that mainly had the overheating problem.

This looks like a rev 2 board, with the mounting/alignment hole visible.

Rev 2 fixed the 1V8 power problem that jamodio found, and I think it also

uses more solder under the LAN chip for a better thermal connection.

Yes they produce quite a bit of heat considering. However i'm not sure that even that is enough for up a mountain.

Depending on the enclosure consider a few power resistors for heating and maybe some insulation and a fan for the summer.

This is what the proper  security enclosures use.
