Nvidia Jetson Nano - Just got mine

I was inspired by jomoenginer and ordered a Jetson Nano Developer Kit directly from Nvidia.  I received it a few days ago but just now had a chance to set it up.

I noticed in YouTube videos that everyone uses the 4A power supply with the barrel jack.  I guess I should have checked earlier.  The default standard power mode is 10W.   It is supposed to be marginal with the 2A micro USB jack. There is a 5W power mode that you can select that reduces the CPU and GPU performance.

I just ordered the Adafruit power supply model that is recommended but they are out of stock at Adafruit and Newegg.  I guess the Jetson Nano must be popular.  I won't get the power supply for another week.  In the meantime I'll just try out the micro USB input using my Raspberry Pi 2.5A supply.  Here's my setup:

It took me a while to get running.  The SD card image is over 12GB!

So far everything seems to be running okay in the default 10W mode.  I've had some minor issues with Ubuntu 18.04.  I guess they've locked down some security holes and I can't figure out how to get access to the primary display (:0) over VNC.

It took me a while to figure out how to find and compile the JetPack sample programs but I'm starting to find my way around.

Here's the cuda particle demo.  The framerate drops by half when I go to full screen.  It could be I need to adjust some settings.

I've got a lot more to learn, but out of the box the Jetson Nano is a lot more responsive than the Raspberry Pi 3B+.  I guess that's to be expected.  I got the Jetson Nano to do object detection on live and recorded video streams.  I haven't decided whether or not to do a JetBot yet.  I'll wait and see how Jon does with his.

I just tried to order a 5V PWM fan and that's out of stock locally.  Maybe Seeed is having issues with demand for Jetson Nanos too.

Ralph, Nice! I'm using a 5V 3A power adapter and it seems to be working fine. I have received most of my JetBot parts and have 3D printed the chassis and other parts, so hopefully I'll be good to go with…

Hi Ralph, a nice demo video there, I really look forward to reading about anything you make in the future - good luck with your Jetson exploits. Rod

Ah, the Cuda demo is working now.  It did not seem to show the last I looked at it.

The Jetson Nano has support for OpenGL-ES 3.2 which is nice considering the Raspberry Pi only supports OpenGL-ES 2.0.  This is a really nice platform.

    Ralph,

I'll be interested in what you will do with your Nano.

    Cheers,

    Jon
