Windows 10 on the rise

4 Aug 2015

The web analytics software that we use on Community gives us a lot of anonymous data that helps us design features & make sure they work properly for a majority of our members. For example, it shows us that most people use Google Chrome (52%), so it makes sense for our test team to concentrate on that, rather than Opera (0.9%).

Another metric we get is what operating system people use.. and with the launch of Windows 10 last week, I ran a couple of reports to see what the uptake was like with people who are visiting Community.

Here's how the top 10 looked from Tue. 21 Jul. 2015 - Mon. 27 Jul. 2015:

And here's how it looked from Tue. 28 Jul. 2015 - Mon.  3 Aug. 2015:

When I look at a single day (Mon 3rd Aug) its risen to 5th place at about 5%. Pretty impressive considering it's been generally available for less than 7 days. It'll be interesting to re-visit this in a month, when I'd expect most PCs to have popped up that 'free upgrade available' message.

I upgraded one of our laptops at the weekend, but initially got this daft error message when I tried to put the update onto an external USB flash drive;

Yeah, thanks for being so specific Microsoft image

    Exactly.. being able to Google an error code is what I was after. Never found a solution to putting it onto USB, so upgraded in place. The trackpad didn't work after the upgrade, but removed the device…

    I usually wait a few months before I look at an update. I got tired of doing the debugging of Microsoft's latest code. Once it looks like the dust has settled I will probably upgrade. DAB

    I haven't taken the plunge on any of our devices - 1xW7 & 2xW8.1...........

    Don't you just love it when you get "Error 87564192  Click here for further details/help" and when you do you get something like "non-specific error"

    Very true. Though at least you can google the error code and get some idea whats going (or not going) on.

    I can't imagine the search term "Something happened" being anywhere near as useful image

The trackpad didn't work after the upgrade, but removed the device, restarted & now the laptop is working better than it did with the Asus rubbish on it.

    I'll hold off with my gaming PC until the summer is over.. screwing it up when my son wants it for Minecraft would be a bad idea image

    image The point I was trying to make is that half the time there is nothing there to help you with the error code - typically when updates fail to install.
