What's the Best Tech in Star Wars?

It's May the 4th, so you know what that means? Star Wars day!

In celebration of the rise and fall of the Galactic Empire, for one day only you can grab our exclusive element14 Jedi badge. How, ask you?

  • First, update your profile image and avatar to your favourite Star Wars character. image(I've already done that, although in honesty I was more interested in working a pun into my username than including my fave character (Boba Fett). But you get the idea.)

  • Then add your favourite saga quote as a status update.

  • Finally, vote in our poll below to determine the coolest technology as seen in the galaxy far, far away.

You've only got today to complete these items, and then a Jedi will you be!

UPDATE: A Long Time Ago, in a Community Far, Far Away...

That's Star Wars Day over for another year. I know it's entirely, even brutally, commercial, but I really hope this becomes a global holiday! I love May 4th, and it beats out the likes of Valentine's Day for engagement value.

As the element14 Jedi Temple is now closed, I thought you'd like to know that within 24 hours we managed to recruit a staggering 98 Jedi! Anyone who wasn't indoctrinated into the hokey religion will now have to wait until next year, when your Jedi training commences once again (assuming we don't all get wiped out by Sith).

The hyperdrive came out as the top Star Wars tech (which is weird given that lightsabers are clearly the coolest thing ever), and you guys picked out some classic quotes for your protocol droid-style status updates that we can live our lives by (until next May 4th), including, but not nearly limited to:

  • Do or do not, there is no try.
  • Fear is the path to the dark side.
  • "He will learn, patience." - Obi-Wan
  • "He will learn, patience." - Obi-Wan
  • You've never heard of the Millennium Falcon??!
  • “I find your lack of faith disturbing.”
  • “It’s a trap!” – Admiral Ackbar
  • An elegant weapon for a more civilized days.

And this one from gihu that's so monumentally bad, it's absolutely awesome!

Good luck trying to chop someone's hand off using a hyperdrive motivator, though.

It's all about the hyperdrive . I suspect that solving the power requirements to make hyperdrive possible would probably open up most of the other technologies as well. "Traveling through hyperspace ain…

I am with Christina on this one. Forbidden Planet is by far my all time favorite. (I'm not joking, and don't call me Surely). Robby made so many cameos after that, it was like a "Where's Waldo" for sci-fi buffs after that.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (based on a 1940 novel, Farewell to the Master by Harry Bates) circa 1951 had an outstanding technological being, Gort.  And, the movie had one of the most famous quotes for many years after it was released: "Gort! Klaatu barada nikto!".

    Harry Bates' novel: http://web.archive.org/web/20140727101426/http://thenostalgialeague.com/olmag/bates-farewell-to-the-master.html

The movie was unfortunately remade hopelessly in 2008.  I was so disappointed with the remake!

for me I hated Star Wars.. Saw the first one and never looked back.  This will date me but, If you like real classic SyFy then you have to pick "The Krell's machine", in Forbiden Panet (1956),

The Krell's 8,000-cubic-mile machine was so advanced that it gave physical form and life to their id. (monsters from your subconscious or bad dreams if you will)
The robot Robie would be a second vote.

To put this in perspective, what is the best sci-fi tech of all time? How does Star Wars tech stack up?

3d printer, biological compatible plastic and a bunch of pumps to create the parts as well as hire med students to print out what you think you should get replaced .  The med students could try to get credited for  ' installing ' them.  Luke's hand almost can be created today ( given the 5 month +  lead to do the bones with marrow and tendons ) thanks to breakthroughs in stem cell creating out of Canada and bone marrow transplant efforts.  The only part not able to get replaced is the brain.

A clone is nothing new but on the other hand, with a fully prosthetic body enabling a person to become a cyborg. The main character of Ghost in the Shell, Major Motoko Kusanagi, is such a cyborg.

This is so much cooler and besides, just think no more bodies to wear out! Like my Uncle Irwin who last month had his Hundred and First birthday! image

We would have to make sure we owned the "means of production" especially as now we would be the "product"
