The First Contact

I just remembered when I was first contacted with HIGH VOLTAGE from grid... I was in 7th grade, my age was 12 or something, i just wanted to experiment electromagnetic concept using nail, copper and battery which taught in school subject, it was successful and electromagnet was working, but, my little me was so curious to make more powerful magnet in the world...So my idea was connecting the copper wires into wall plug and I am too cautious about safety so i was thinking using stereo player wire plug (which got 2 pin on one end for wall plug and another end got 2 female pin connecter(holes)) was safe... i just plugged the one end of the copper into one hole and another end to second one, i was still holding the nail...i switched on the plug and BOOOM, I FELT THE FIRST CONTACT... it was fraction of a second and copper wires were in loose contact so it got disconnected...and I was safe, My parents didn't know this till now... image

So tell me when was your SHOCKING moment of the FIRST CONTACT of HIGH VOLTAGE...

Please tell me your age of FIRST CONTACT...

DISCLAIMER: I don't encourage anyone to attempt this once in their life time, this poll is intend to expose the caution, professional guide and safety to work with HIGH VOLTAGE.

The difference between nerds like us and the rest of the population is when they ask us when was our first time we immediately remember almost being electrocuted. John

I found an article in a very old magazine about building a hot dog cooker when I was about 12 or so. The basic idea was to put two nails in a 2x4 a little less than the length of a hot dog apart. Then…

This is extremely dangerous to attempt. I hope you are carefull with your "Toasted knife" I really hope it doesnt toast you haha. Personally i would stick with my usual farberware knife

I just voted, 2 years late.  It’s funny, my experience was almost exactly the same as the poll originator, Anthony.  We made electromagnets in school shop class, 7th grade.  I wanted a stronger magnet, so I plugged in it at home in my bedroom.  IIRC, that old house had actual fuses.  Parents definitely realized it happened.  The fuse blew, my copper wires melted, and there was the smell in my bedroom.  I didn’t do that again, as a child.  I’ve popped breakers at home by mistake as an adult.  (Oh, just today actually, by mistake replacing a light switch!)

And another memorable event with electricity, touching the electric fence at my uncles’ farm.  High voltage, low amps.  I don’t remember what age that was.

It is amazing how the memory is cemented by a little electricity.

So many but the most memorable are:

First shock from the grid was at 5 from a hot chassis hallicrafters S38B. Got it through my headphones while lying down....

At 6 from the spark plug wire on my mini bike. Stupid thing wouldn't shut off so I pulled the plug wire barehanded...

Wish I still had that hallicrafters radio. I do have a Hallicrafters S38E which still works great. I have an isolation transformer for this one. I miss the older half moon dials

at 14 from a GM HEI ignition. dont pull wires to check for a missing cylinder anymore. This one hurt the most.

at 17 from a 19" crt sitting on the shelf. I discharged it before I removed it from the chassis and put it on the shelf.  A couple of days later I was done repairing the chassis and when I went to grab the tube I put one hand on either side and somehow managed to put my thumb right in the anode connector. My other hand was on the metal frame strap.

I was in high school, mid teens. The rather primitive incoming main panel had a lamp socket that needed some cleaning. It was quite rusted and had lint and dust. I turned off the main switch and tried to clean it with a Meccano screw driver (uninsulated). It was a 220 V AC connection but I had not pressed hard, so the dust and dirt provided enough resistance, and I survived to be writing this today. It was a bad shock. I learnt that day to use the neon tester before contacting anything that could be live!

I was 3 to 4 years old when I had my first shocking experience.  I was a very inquisitive child.  I wanted to know how everything worked and was always trying to see if I could figure out how things went to together.  Back at the time, coffee was sold in tins.  This tins had this little key-like device that you used to remove a metal strip that separated the lid from the rest of the can.  To me these used 'keys' with the metal strip wound around them were fascinating (they looked like springs).  One day I unwound one of them from the key (without cutting my fingers).  I then noticed that the 'key' end was just about the same size and shape as the those little holes in the wall (sockets), so I tried to see if the key would fit.  Boy did it!  I learned a lot about electricity that day.

That was not my last experience with getting shocked, or generating sparks.  After all I am an engineer.

Yeah, that even solves the issue of the butter coming out of the fridge too hard.
