The First Contact

I just remembered when I was first contacted with HIGH VOLTAGE from grid... I was in 7th grade, my age was 12 or something, i just wanted to experiment electromagnetic concept using nail, copper and battery which taught in school subject, it was successful and electromagnet was working, but, my little me was so curious to make more powerful magnet in the world...So my idea was connecting the copper wires into wall plug and I am too cautious about safety so i was thinking using stereo player wire plug (which got 2 pin on one end for wall plug and another end got 2 female pin connecter(holes)) was safe... i just plugged the one end of the copper into one hole and another end to second one, i was still holding the nail...i switched on the plug and BOOOM, I FELT THE FIRST CONTACT... it was fraction of a second and copper wires were in loose contact so it got disconnected...and I was safe, My parents didn't know this till now... image

  • So many but the most memorable are:

     

    First shock from the grid was at 5 from a hot chassis hallicrafters S38B. Got it through my headphones while lying down....

     

    At 6 from the spark plug wire on my mini bike. Stupid thing wouldn't shut off so I pulled the plug wire barehanded...

     

    Wish I still had that hallicrafters radio. I do have a Hallicrafters S38E which still works great. I have an isolation transformer for this one. I miss the older half moon dials

     

    at 14 from a GM HEI ignition. dont pull wires to check for a missing cylinder anymore. This one hurt the most.

     

    at 17 from a 19" crt sitting on the shelf. I discharged it before I removed it from the chassis and put it on the shelf.  A couple of days later I was done repairing the chassis and when I went to grab the tube I put one hand on either side and somehow managed to put my thumb right in the anode connector. My other hand was on the metal frame strap.

    It is amazing how the memory is cemented by a little electricity.
