Your base OS for development or your favourite Workbench OS!

i recently had a good long argument on using Windows or Linux Os for development. I am a serious Windows 10 fanboy. So I just wanted to know how many use Linux, Windows 10 and MacOS.

I know these OS's are un-comparable but I just want to show my friends the voting down by real engineers of this community!

All those voting I would also love to hear why you love the OS and how it differs itself from others.

I continue to use my Windows 7 Pro OS. I was never a fan of the later versions of Windows and I use too many programs that I could not find availables for Linux.

If you're a professional then you should be capable and comfortable with both Windows and Linux. By all means have a preference for one or the other, but don't make the mistake of thinking anyone else…

    You bet:

How can they do this ?

    https://www.tomsguide.com/news/windows-10-update-causes-blue-screen-of-death-what-to-do

I want complete control of the code running on my computer, and the ability to revert to previous state after any "update" that I do choose to permit.

My desktop is dedicated to Ubuntu 18.04 and has Eclipse with many of the STM add-ons.  For those IDEs that won't run natively on Linux, there is a Laptop running Win10, and it's pretty much dedicated to IDEs.  Another laptop dual boots into Ubuntu 18.04 and Windows 7 for making PCBs on a small CNC router.  The third laptop dual boots into Ubuntu 18.04 and Windows 10.  The wife runs Windows 10 on her laptop, but she has disabled updates.  I think my son is running Ubuntu on his laptop and his desktop.  Then there are all of the SBCs running linux.

I ran OS/2 for several years.  Used to reboot it once a month just for grins.  There are still some pick-and-place machines out there running OS/2.0.

Your pain points regarding specific software are not unique if you are thinking of a move from Microsoft Windows (MSWin) O/S's to Linux.

My employers laptop running MSWin gave me the flexibility to work from home and still move to Linux on my personal computer. Without the laptop, I would be unable to access from home many of the vendor applications developed for MSWin only.

The MAC O/S does some really nice stuff but at a price point I don't find acceptable.

The decision made by the corporation, once again, create user defined paths, that to me, are used to shore obscene profits.

You are most probably frustrated with the Windows 10 Updates right!

I had issues with the updates the first years W10 was released. On my own PC and computers of several family members.

They were typically related to sound drivers and Access/logon issues for one of the user accounts.

For a year now things have smoothened out and we don't have these issues anymore after the updates.

I have several machines running WIndows7, one running Windows10 but I haven't switched it on for a month or more.

I avoid Linux because several of the tools I use all the time are not supported or properly supported.

    I really don't want to use 2 systems but I dislike Win10 - so that's why I've stuck with WIn7.

If Solidworks, Keill MDK, Aldec Active-HDL and EasyPC were available on Linux it would be different. But I've got 17years worth of stuff locked into those tools image

The line of least disruption will be to swap to Win10 image - but I'll be kicking and screaming all the way !

Yeah! And an Official Microsoft Office 2019 for MacOS right!

I do love MacOS but it runs perfectly on a MacBook!

And MacBooks usually are too costly!
