Your base OS for development or your favourite Workbench OS!

i recently had a good long argument on using Windows or Linux Os for development. I am a serious Windows 10 fanboy. So I just wanted to know how many use Linux, Windows 10 and MacOS.

I know these OS's are un-comparable but I just want to show my friends the voting down by real engineers of this community!

All those voting I would also love to hear why you love the OS and how it differs itself from others.

I continue to use my Windows 7 Pro OS. I was never a fan of the later versions of Windows and I use too many programs that I could not find availables for Linux.

If you're a professional then you should be capable and comfortable with both Windows and Linux. By all means have a preference for one or the other, but don't make the mistake of thinking anyone else…

others: windows and linux for boards that can run an OS. latest versions if I can. RTOSes for microcontrollers. FreeRTOS or TI-RTOS.

Yeah Real Linux is Better! Things like Snapd, Systemmd and many other core ubuntu linux stuff wont run on WSL!

But when you just want to run some small shell scripts for some testing purpose WSL is super fast and integrates with Windows well!

I do have a few Linux VMs myself as well. Don't run WSL - real Linux is better, but prior to WSL, I used Cygwin quite a bit.

actually there is one vote for macOS up till now, it's mine.

To be honest I'm quite happy with it, also due to the fact that it is based on Unix (I'm a Linux user as well).

All major software packages, runs on macOS (Matlab, Simulink, Eagle, Arduino, Eclipse, ..........).

Also lot's of hardware is supported, e.g. the PicoScope USB scopes.

So just curious are there more macOS users around here?

Something I noticed there are some votes for MacOS but no one seems to speak in favor of MacOS!

Are MacOS users so less in E14!

Yeah! I do love Linux for some facts!

Its lightweight, Fast (sometimes), Amount of Flavors available and the list is long!

E14 have got something like real engineers respecting each other's choice and work!

I know everyone here have used all three OS's at least once!

One of the things I like about E14 is that this question hasn't descended into "your choice of OS sucks" as it usually does. Let's hope we can keep it that way.

Yeah the Linux Terminal often called the Savior!

And about the games. One of my friends who never knew about WineDB and Steam Proton!

    https://appdb.winehq.org/

    https://www.protondb.com/

He got a FitGirl repack of GTA5 spended almost 3-4 hours installing it using wine in Ubuntu 18.04.

    RESULT: NOTHING

I have a got a single PC which works super fine!

Running WSL which integrates with VS Code nicely. Yeah am waiting for WSL2!

And I use my VMWare inside which is my main testing environment!

    image

But sometimes I do get bottle necked due the amount of RAM needed for some OS's!

I had MacOS Catalina running in the VMWare -> https://www.geekrar.com/install-macos-catalina-on-vmware-on-windows-pc/  (Not my Blog!)

But then did some experiments and it crashed!

My total amount of RAM is just 8GB! So allocating 5GB to MacOS doesn't even fulfill its basic needs!
