Arduino mini arcade cabinet

I want to introduce a tiny arcade cabinet (14cm heigth) based on the Arduino. The arcade is also full compatible to the Gamebuino - an Arduino based game console. The Arcade game is equipped with a ATMEGA328 and the screen of the game has been provided by a Nokia 5110 LCD. A couple of Open Source games for the Gamebuino and so also for this Arcade cabinet are available - programmed under the Arduino IDE... Check my website for more information.

Yep - back from the Maker Faire Berlin. It was awesome:

I saw some big and small arcade machines at the Maker Faire And for those going to the Berlin Faire, I see that Hartmut will be there.

    Hi,

yes lasercutting is an option. We're using a cnc milling machine to cut the openings in our enclosure sets... this colud be done with such a cnc milling machine too

There are cheaper 7 inch tfts with hdmi on the market. 4D is a little bit expensive.... and Bluetooth for external controls for example in a 2 player mode is good idea also-

    Hi,

partially agre image Your point of view is more oriented to the commercial aspects (and it is correct), I was thinking to something more expensive and nearest to the original features with a plus.

Sure that using a Pi zero it is an incredible jump respect to the Arduino version, I agree with this and it is great if it fit in some already designed enclosure.

My idea for the enclosure is laser cutting 2mm acrylic, so it is not so difficult to ship in a easy to assemble kit. The LCD 7" is the bigger form-factor conditioning the entire system so the arcade enclosure should just be scaled to fit with smaller (and cheaper) screens. I think that a 5 inches is something again acceptable for visibility and the final dimensions of the product are good in my opinion. I have no idea (not yet tested) if the game distributions for the Pi support the 4D touch and non-touch small LCD, it is something that should be tried.

Now my difficult are to find somewhere the proportion design of an original arcade big case to make a CAD design smaller for the PI. Do you think this idea has a sense? Thanks to the Bluetooth the Pi3 can be setup with a internal USB controllers or connected from the outside with a commercial Bluetooth (I have used for testing a Playstation Bluetooth compatibile device.

    Hi,

yes the Pizero is not so powerful as the Pi3. But the Pizero is small enough to fit in the Arduino Arcade case. This case is much more cheaper as the bigger cases for the older Raspberry Pi arcade kits and because of the smaller size its also easier for shipment....

A 7" inch TFT is a good idea but too big for the Arduino and RPi Arcade enclosure. In the older RPI kits we've used a 5,6 inch TFT

    Hello Hartmut,

I can say what I was thinking to when I wrote my previous post. First of all - it's my fault - I don't consider zero as PI family. There is not a special reason, but it seems difficult to find and I don't like it too much. To be honest I have never tried one, so mine maybe just a wrong prejudice. When I made the road test of the Raspberry PI3 I have experimented almost all the distributions available including the various specialised for gaming and media home broadcasting.

I think that a bit bigger bar console like the arduino version maybe the perfect "concurrent" to the Ikea gaming table.

A good experiment that I like to try is using a 7" LCD screen. As it is possible to configure how the image is rotated it is interesting a vertical console with the screen reflected in a mirror, just like the '80s video games. It maybe more usable than the Arduino version that it is so small to manage in my opinion.

    Hi Enrico,

yes you are right we have a similar project on our website with Raspberry Pi. Unfortunately both sets for Arduino and RPi are obsolete. At the moment I'm thinking about a new version with smaller screen and Pizero but for the Arduino enclosure... Whats your opinion about this idea?

    Cheers

    Hartmut
