Human Detection Sensor in Motion & Idle state

Hi everyone,

We are developing vending Machine and the area of installation is outer environment - complete public places. When the machine won't be in use, it will be in sleep mode and when there is any human availability near the machine, we want the machine to function accordingly.

I have researched and realized that PIR sensor won't be of use for this application because idle human body presence is also required and Pyroelectric can not do that. So, researched more and found out thermopile + MEMS sensors e.g. D6T omron sensor. But if it detects the temperature change, would be it good to use it in outer environment where temperature is not fixed? And it won't be able to reject Animals too, right?

Image processing is the only option if we want to detect human presence near the machine?

Please advice me the solution that can be best fitted for the requirement. Any help would be really helpful for me.

Thank you!

Relatively slight movements will set off a PIR sensor and a timer can be set in the vending machine to keep it active for a reasonable period after it activates so that a transaction can be completed.  Another option is ultrasonic distance measurement or it could be used with the PIR.   Neither requires light like a camera and they are simple and inexpensive.  There is also a third “radar” option.

If you really want to use a camera then face detection is relatively easy with a Raspberry Pi and I recently did a RoadTest here on Element14 with a Pi4.    I would start with something simpler like PIR and ultrasonic distance.
