Simple project for 10-11 year old.

I'm looking to do a project with some 10-11 year olds in a local school which uses electronics to show how they are feeling. I was thinking about a traffic light system where I can get the children to build the kit and then use it in under an hour. They would move the light to red when frustrated/mad and green for happy etc.

 

I have some of these Multicomp Nano boardsMulticomp Nano boards (1813414) which we can pre-program, and then add the rest of the part to it.

 

Any ideas would be greatfully received

    Did you ask the school if they would be okay with the students building lie detectors? I am opposed to knowledge suppression in all its forms. And your statement certainly set off my alarm bells. Okay…

    if they`re going to be stand-alone boards, then a 9V batt and some clips would be an idea I also looked at those LEDs and from what I can see, I think you`ll need resistors for them, 330 Ohm or there abouts…

    Billabot it's good to see you getting kids exposed to technology.  It seems there is very little of this in schools these days.  That's awesome.

    Thanks for the encouragement.  I ran into a little problem with the BB400.  I was trying to simplify access to the dip switches and on the large BB the power rails are aligned with the inner multipoint connectors.  On the BB400 they are offset by 1/2.  On the large BB there is the option to put the bottom row of pins directly into the ground rail so it would be easier to flip those tiny little switches.  

     

    PatKelly:  Is it too late to order the larger Bread Boards?  I believe that ebay had some reasonably priced ones (SYB-120) that ship from Hong Kong.

                    And now they come in primary colors: red, green, and blue.

     

    On the MC Nano, I think it might be a good idea to cap the 2x3 ICSP pin block to prevent damage from accidental touching since the dip switch will be right next to those pins on the BB.  If others know more about that please chime in.  Maybe the internal diodes will protect it 100% of the time but I don't know if it will or not.

    εὕρηκα heúrēka! 

     

    Upon viewing this video and inspecting the BB400 much closer, I discovered the most amazing thing.  The BB400 is modular!  The two dual power rails can be easily separated from the core of the breadboard.  I can now see that by cutting thru the adhesive backing that the power rail can be flipped around and REALIGNED so that the rail holes now line up with the holes on the larger core board.  So just supply some rigid substrate (PCB?) to mount it on and there you have it.  The 5 position dip switches can be connected to ground rail at the edge of the project for ease of access.

     

    Yes, I know, it is called the Lifetime of Learning.
