Is this possable

I want to put some LED's on my sons drums so that they will light up when he hits them.  I could use a vibration sensor to turn on the lights or I was thinking.  Can I get a frequency sensor and have it read different sounds and have different lights come on when for the different instruments.  I found a place where I can get 5 meters of programable color lights.  Too bad I have to buy 20 rolls but I can deal with that. 

 

Any suggestions anyone?

    I don't know if you've finished your idea or not, but one thing I think you could try - piezo elements. Measuring frequencies might be a little complex, but with a piezo, I believe it outputs a different voltage depending on the force imposed on them. I couldn't say for certain, as I really only use piezos as tiny little speakers, but I think that would be a good starting point in this case. Best wishes!

    Yes, I agree.  A while ago I found a cute little project in Circuit Cellar mag, use a standard ruler, peizo speaker with housing removed, a small paper spring clamp with the folding handles removed, stick the peizo on ruler abt 2 in from one end and place clamp between peizo and a good rubber band from one end over other end. hook peizo to a small amp and play the ruler like a guitar.  It picked up frequencies really well.  So, I agree the peizo is a good choice.
