First arduino project, please help.

Ok, so i started a project utilizing arduinos (2x) (havent decided to go uno or mega yet)

 

My quesion is while using a tft screen and an adapter shield is there any way to expand the board?

I have ran out of pins. my project requires 15 output pins and 5 input pins(some analog and some digital) other than what are being used buy the tft screens.

 

is there anyway to make 2 or 3 arduino boards communicate with eachother instantly?

 

example: if arduino board(1) reads a digital signal into pin 5

              then arduino board(2) reads that arduino board(1) has recieved the signal so it sends a 5v output to a relay via pin 8?

 

I have yet to purchace my arduino boards, I would like some input about what would be the best way to do this.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank You.

  • Also wondering if i use the rx tx serial pins. if i have the touchscreen arduino send a certain integer if the other arduino can read that integer and perform an action.

     

    example:

    Touch arduino: Press button"1" on the screen. send a "1" through the tx pin

     

    Second arduino: Recieves the "1" and sends power to pin 8

     

    Touch arduino: Press button "2" on the screen. send a "2" through the tx pin

     

    Second arduino: Recieves the "2" and sends power to pin 10

     

     

    I understand that probably wont support any multi touch function. but im not really aiming for that. lol.

    Hi Anthony,

     

    Thanks for the info. I'm having a bit of a think...

     

    If anyone else has ideas, please chip in as I'm fairly new to Arduino myself!

    You certainly can use serial to pass anything onto another Arduino, etc.

     

    There are a few examples of Serial using the computer which works equally as well for the 'far' end.

     

    Most data passed serially consists of a protocol where it starts with a character, contains x data bits, and then has a checksum, and a stop character.

    This is to ensure that only valid data is accepted and acted on.

     

    A vehicle is electrically very noisy so you will need to put some thought into some form of protocol or using an existing one.

     

    You may wish to use a small computer to do the graphics and accept inputs, and pass the data serially to an Arduino or two to do the physical interfacing.

     

     

    It looks like quite a challenge, especially for a begining project.

    thank you mark for your response.

     

    I have thought about using a small computer such as rasperry pi but the only problem i would have is the time it take to boot it up. and i wouldnot be able to start the vehicle until it boots up. 

    And i have also thought about how noisy the car will be. and i dont know if a simple debounce script would work but that was what i was going to try first

    Could you please give an example of something that should be passed serially? as in should it be a more complex integer or a character and an integer?.

     

    And it is gonna be quite a challege but that is what i am looking for. Something to challange what i already know and push me to learn more.

     

    im not new to coding at all i have coded quite a few flash games using both java and c++ but have never actually got into the hardware side of it all. and it has always intruiged by it.

    There is no reason why the Arduino side can't do the vehicle starting, with the ignition starting the RPi (or similar).

    I'm also certain that removing a lot of the drivers/unecessary will improve the boot time.

    Some of the other SBC have SATA drive capability and using a SolidState drive means 1 or 2 secs boot time.

    You have of course looked under File Examples on the Arduino IDE .....image

     

    There are three under the communications tab featuring examples of the Arduino receiving serial data and performing a task.

    These just use simple characters, etc, and don't rely on doing much else while they wait.

     

    I presume your search using google was also as useful for tutorials and the like..??

    You have the advantage of understanding the coding, so a few examples or tutorials should have you on your way in no time.
