Wearable Tech - What's next?

I'll elaborate a little on the points raised about combining art with technology, specifically about assessment.

 

Although art/craft and sci/eng can yield very interesting results in combination, it's worth pointing out that they are so dissimilar in nature that they are almost entirely unrelated to each other, and so the perceived properties of the end result stem not from their combination but from each individually.  Let me explain.

 

The perceived merit of an item of art lies completely in the eye of the beholder --- one and the same piece of art can be seen as wonderful by one person and dreadful by another, and neither of them is right nor wrong.  Not even the opinion of the world's top expert in fine arts will make it good when another person's judgment finds it bad.  In other words, appreciation of the artistic qualities of an item is completely subjective.  (Note that many items of art have functional aspects as well --- that's separate, and dealt with now.)

 

The merit of a technological mechanism is entirely functional --- it either does the job for which it was designed successfully or poorly or not at all, and this assessment is measurable and objective.  Of course, different people may have different requirements and they sometimes shift the goalposts when assessing whether desired functionality has been met, but a mismatch between the assessor's requirements and the design requirements is no fault of the device or the technology.  Assessment of the item's merit measured against its own design goals is always objective.  (Note that many products of technology have artistic aspects as well, but those are only by coincidence related to the function and should be assessed on their own merits.)

 

This essential difference between the artistic merit and the technological merit of an item that combines both is so stark that they don't really affect each other --- the technical term for this is orthogonality.  Sometimes people think that some particular functionality is ugly or beautiful, but this is actually wrong because it confuses two issues, the function and the implementation of that function.  The same functionality could in principle be implemented in many different ways, and it could even be hidden entirely, so ugliness or beauty cannot be a subjective attribute of the functionality whose degree of success can be determined objectively.  Instead, the chosen implementation of the function usually has a physical aspect, and it is this physical aspect that may attract subjective merit or criticism.  Functionality actually has no artistic dimension at all.  (If we say that something "operates beautifully", that's really just a metaphor.)

 

The latter statement needs some elaboration, because scientists, engineers and technologists in general often use terms that are undoubtedly subjective when assessing a technical design:  for example, we often say that a good design is elegant, or efficient, or minimalist, and we might say that a bad design is convoluted, or inefficient, or over-engineered, and so on.  Doesn't this mean that the merits of our technology are subjective as well?  Not really, because again two things are being conflated, the functional merit (how closely it meets its design requirements) and how well it fares on secondary figures of merit that are not design requirements, eg. our individual concept of elegance.  (Requirements have to be measurable, otherwise compliance cannot be determined).  As was mentioned earlier, changing the goalposts does not make sense in engineering assessment.

 

This finally brings me back to my opening point about how to assess an item that combines elements of art and technology.  When adding a technological element like LEDs to a wearable, it's tempting to think that LEDs add artistic value.  They don't, at least not directly.  They add light, and it is the light that may or may not provide artistic value, and this same light could be generated by other means.  The LEDs can be assigned nothing more than a functional figure of merit based on whether they are working or not, whether they are bright enough or not, whether they are the desired colour, whether they use too much current, and so on --- and all of these properties appear on the datasheet.  They are objective, not subjective.  If you chose particular LEDs but you didn't find the end result artistically pleasing, this is not a failure of the LEDs --- functionally the technology is perfect (unless they're faulty) --- instead, it's a failure of your choice of light for your design.  Of course, somebody else could express surprise at your disappointment, because to them it looks beautiful.  The artistic merit is not a functional property of the LEDs. image

 

In summary, I'll answer Leslie's point #2 in this way:  if you've combined art with technology then you have inherently added function, so it can never be not functional (unless it's faulty of course).  The function may be nothing more than to add an effect for artistic purposes (for example light), but you can't sensibly apply artistic judgements to the function.  If the light that is produced is exactly that intended by the design then it's functionally perfect, even if the end result is artistically ugly as sin to every living being on the planet. image  Even when combined, art and technology live in inherently different spaces, and what they each contribute cannot be judged by a single measuring stick.

Addendum:  The above has the rather curious consequence that despite combining them together in the same item, artistic and technological design are necessarily separate because the goal of one is a desired value judgment and the goal of the other is correct functional operation.  The mind can try to maneuver them both towards a common goal, but they're essentially different occupations.

    I don't agree with that.  I see art and engineering working in harmony, with outstanding engineering producing the same aesthetic thrill as "pure" art.

     

    Exhibit A:  The works of architect Antoni Gaudi combine beautiful art along with sound structural engineering.  Some of his works are so fanciful that it's amazing that they stand, yet if you look at the structural engineer underneath it is completely sound and meshes perfectly with the art.  In contrast, Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings often have structural problems in spite of their beauty.

     

    Exhibit B:  I once challenged myself to route a rather dense board on two signal layers.  The primary components on the board were an FPGA in PQFP-208 package and a CPLD in a TQ-100, plus some SOIC bus switches to protect 3.3V FPGA I/Os from 5V circuits.  Through very careful pin assignment of the FPGA and CPLD, I was able to do it in two signal layers and the aethetics of the board are quite beautiful, with wonderful parallel rivers flowing across the board and between SOIC pins instead of the "swiss cheese" of a many-layered board.

     

    Exhibit C:  The Eiffel Tower.

     

    Exhibit D:  Myriad steel structures of the 19th Century and early 20th Century before the suits in accounting decided buildings had to be purely functional and there was no room for art.

     

    In my own work, I find that my hardware and software designs that are aesthetically pleasing function better, and that if the design starts to look "ugly" then there's got to be a better way to do it -- and there usually is.

     

    Some of this is probably from my upbringing.  I was a born engineer, with the engineer gene inherited from my grandfather.  However, my parents are both academics: Art History and English Lit.  So I've ended up as a generalist in an age of specialists.

    This "harmony" of which you speak, please define it for me in scientific/engineering/mathematical terms --- I bet you can't, and if you can't then it doesn't belong there.  The reason you can't is because it's not a figure of merit from the scientific/engineering/mathematical world at all, but from the world of human appreciation, a subjective value judgment.  That subjective value judgement is completely separate from the objective functional property that the human examines to return that value judgment.

    (I'm afraid I don't know anything about architecture, but we share a love and some knowledge of music, so let's use that as a subject domain for some analysis and examples.)

     

    In music, a set of pure tones are often said to be in harmony or disharmony --- this is the foundation upon which the entire edifice of the study and performance of music is based.  It's relatively simple so it gives us a good basis for analysis.  Pure tones are sounds containing single frequencies devoid of any accompanying harmonics that give a sound timbre or "color" --- the phrase more or less contains its own definition, ie. "no overtones".  A pure tone has only three physical properties, its frequency ("pitch"), its amplitude ("volume" or "intensity"), and its phase --- just for simplicity I'll leave the 2nd and 3rd ones out of the discussion initially, but they're listed in case we need them later.

     

    So. let's start by talking about frequency and about pitch.  In the paragraph above I've placed the two words next to each other and they're presented as if they were synonyms, but they're not.  Frequency is an objectively measurable physical property of a pure tone, whereas pitch is a perceptual property determined by the very complex human auditory system comprising ears, neural pathways and our brains.  (Not only human of course, but let's stick to humans here.)  Pitch is studied in psychoacoustics.  Perceptual properties like pitch are always subjective, and pitch is only a sensation, not a physical property of a pure tone.  Fortunately most people perceive pitch very similarly, although there are anomalies just as we find in the perception of light (colour blindness and related pathologies are very well known).  Because the perceived pitch so commonly corresponds directly to the objectively measured frequency, it is extremely usual to conflate them together and treat them as one, but this is incorrect.  We know it's incorrect, yet we commonly use these two words as synonyms simply as a shortcut.  Life is full of shortcuts, and very useful they are to us, but one must always be aware that a shortcut is a shortcut and not treat it as anything stronger like equivalence.

     

    So, we've already left the objective domain when we talk about pitch, but it's about to get worse.  We can't talk about harmony in the context of a single pure tone, we need a set of two or more of them taken together in order to discuss whether they harmonize or not.  So, let's use a set of perfect sinusoidal frequency generators and perfect amps and perfect speakers to generate two or more pure tones in the lab for analysis of whether they harmonize.  (I'll stick to just two pure tones here, but the same applies to any number greater than one, although it gets horribly complex with a large set.)

     

    "But wait", you cry, "don't leave the objective lab just yet, we can tell if they harmonize just from their frequencies!".  Not so fast, cowboy, you're conflating the expectation of harmony or disharmony as perceived by most humans with what is actually happening in the physics.  Nature or reality doesn't know about harmony.  Two frequencies will "beat" when combined if their frequencies are not identical nor integer multiples of a fundamental, but all beating frequencies are the same to nature --- she doesn't consider some as "harmonious" and some as "disharmonious".  With larger sets of pure tones, she doesn't consider certain combinations of beating frequencies as harmonious chords and others as horrible dischordant sounds --- those are human value judgments, and they're subjective.  Beating is a completely objective physical function and can be measured without involving the naturally subjective human perceptions and value judgments.  So no, we can't discuss harmony without bringing in the human angle.  Ratios of frequencies are just another of those very useful shortcuts that allow us to predict expected perceptions in the subjective world, nothing more.

     

    The subjective rabbit hole opened up by examining harmony goes very deep indeed.  Consonance and dissonance are related subjective properties used as metrics in musical sound perception, and they are so subjective that they are affected strongly by cultural groupings and history, and even by prior acquaintance or exposure to the sound.  This rabbit hole goes far, far outside the realm of objective reality.

     

    So to recap, when art is combined with technology, any perceived artistic merit or demerit in the technology is not an assessment of its objective functional properties, but a subsequent subjective assessment of its side effects at most. Our perceptions are side effects of the operation of the technological element in art even when the whole purpose of the technology is to create those perceptions, and it is those perceptions that result in our labeling the result as artful or not.  The function itself is not artful, and it makes no sense to describe it in those terms because those terms are not part of the objective domain in which the function is defined.  The function is either operating correctly or it is not, or somewhere in between, and that is all you can say about it in the objective world.  You have to leave that world to make a value judgment about artistic merit.

    I have a friend who is a historic keyboard specialist, who is the source for most of what I know about historic tunings.  At one time she had a very spirited canary who helped her tune harpsichords and pianos.  If she had the tuning just right, Wolfie would trill joyfully (or at least in a manner suggestive of joy to us mere humans).  Sure, she could also use an Accu-Tuner, but Wolfie was just as good.

     

    Regarding nature and reality: I guess a good question is whether humans are part of nature and/or reality, or whether they are unwelcome guests or outright intruders [1].  I suspect the answer to that question is that it depends on the human.  I like to think of myself as part of nature as evidenced by how much I abhor vacuuming [2].

    Wiktionary defines harmony as "(1) Agreement or accord, (2) a pleasing combination of elements" and a number of music-specific definitions.  When I look at the Eiffel Tower, I see both the simplistic beauty of the overall lines and the intricacies of the steel lattices that create curves from straight steel girders.  I also see how the structure takes the mechanical stresses of a gigantic tower and distributes them downwards and outwards to keep the tower strong and stable even in high winds.  The Eiffel Tower is "a pleasing combination of elements" to me as a human -- though many considered it a monstrosity when it was first built.  But it's also pleasing to the forces of nature that it works with to last for over 100 years.  I won't say the tower "exploits" these forces, because it's nature that's in charge here -- the Tower works in accord with the forces.  Engineering is the art of understanding these forces and using their nature to build something useful.  And if you use them particularly well, the result often is aesthetically pleasing -- at least to this engineer.

    Your fun question about whether humans are part of nature is of course just a figure-of-speech matter, despite having preoccupied generations of philosophers before they wised up to the concept of content-free argumentation.  (Oh OK, I'm being over-generous, they didn't wise up, and still argue about the number of angels that will fit on a pinhead.)  I use figures of speech like "nature" too, but I know that they're only decorative.  I guess it's worth saying something about this.

     

    Humans (and canaries) are part of the physical universe --- most people would agree with that, although agreement is not strictly necessary because the instruments of science detect them, and I've not heard of any humans nor canaries that aren't detected by those instruments.  But perhaps that analysis is circular. image

     

    Anyway, although they are part of the physical universe, such high-order lifeforms are very complex parts of it.  Much of the complexity lies in the apparatus that handles perception and further processing of information in the brain, and there's also another element present that gives us immense problems of analysis:  consciousness.  I'm going to use the more inclusive meaning of consciousness and once again put canaries and humans in the same category (magpies at least pass some of the key tests for consciousness).  Consciousness allows us to perceive and know that we perceive external inputs like sounds, and it also allows us to acquire subjective differences in our value judgments about those perceptions compared to other individuals of our species.  This is where it gets interesting.

     

    Laboratory instruments measure objective properties of sounds in the lab, but consciousness assesses acoustic perceptions of external sounds in our brains, and it's done in each brain separately and differently.  And that's the key difference between the two situations --- it's not that humans and canaries are not part of nature or physics, but that what their brains "measure" (using the word loosely) occurs differently in each individual, whereas in the lab it is measured identically everywhere in the world or else we have a fault.

     

    It's pretty clear that "nature" is a rather sloppy word for precise discussions in this area since it leads to the "But surely we are part of nature" argument.  "Reality" is not a lot better, as it leads to the equally complex "realities as perceptions" argument.  I think it's fairly safe to use such terms though, as long as one recognizes that these are just linguistic decorations, and also useful shortcuts in speech.

In your overlapped response above, I notice that you didn't manage to find sci/eng/math terms to describe the artistic properties of technological functions.  I'll take that as success in convincing you that what sometimes appear to be atomic expressions of artistic merit of function are not actually atomic at all, but can be split into an objective functional part and a subjective value judgment. image

    Hi Morgaine,

     

    I would equate harmony with elegance.  A good technical solution is usually referred as elegant when it is a simple and clean solution without unpredictable artifacts.

    Both are interpreted in the brain as a condition where the intellect and the emotional side agree, hence the term harmony.

     

    You will like my new book, "I Killed Shrodinger's Cat!".  I present the idea that nearly all of the energy in the universe vibrates at unique frequencies based upon their mass and charge.

    So technically, the universe is in harmony as all of the various frequencies interact over space and time.

    I also show that everything in the universe is finite and deterministic.  No more dice throwing to determine states.  Everything follows a predictive sequence.

     

    So I believe that art and science follow the same rules because both rely upon the basic forces and mater of the universe.

    Both are just subsets of the whole.

     

    By the way, I will bet the Leslie is very happy with the levels at which these discussions have reached.

    I am not sure that anyone would see this deep a level of understanding and discussions about the relevance of art and science.

    You seldom see people with our level of knowledge discussing a philosophical issue.

    Morgaine and John -- this is all very interesting, and I think the difference seems to be in the labels or terminology.  Morgaine, you definitely have a scholar's vocab that I need to carry in my pocket! image  It's nice to come together here to compare insights.   I'll offer some info on historic garment construction tomorrow, as I'm on deadline for a project today.

    A species on a different planet could in principle look at some utter rats nest of code that I would never dare release because it is revolting even to me and releasing it publicly would be a crime against humanity, but instead of considering it horrible they could regard it as magnificent because their aesthetic sense of what is good is based on the values that I consider most dreadful.

    Why, that code is pure poetry -- Vogon poetry :-)

    Haha, that's a curious idea, but certainly interesting.  And there's probably a SciFi novel in there somewhere! image

     

    Regarding "better", the engineer in me equates improvement to utility, so I find "better" very easy to quantify.  However, my non-engineering side appreciates subjective things like beauty and elegance and minimalism and cross-cutting interests like independence and sustainability and a large catalog of other things as well.

     

    Then the engineer chimes back in and, helpfully, wants to optimize for all of them.  But that's tricky. image

    Okay, I've branched this conversation to look at the question "what's next?".  Morgaine originally brought up the discussion of how we define wearable tech, and she also reminded us that clothing has been making advances even back in the Stone Age.  One designer I met at a recent wearable tech panel in NY is going back to those original techniques (not unusual as fashion often builds on the past).  Check out the work of Titania Inglis -- fashion that includes primitive lacing and fur.  At the same event, there was a curator, Ariele Elia, from the Museum of FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology).  She spoke on the same topic of fashion construction through the ages, and mentioned their show RetroSpective.

     

    I know everyone is fussing about Google Glass right now, but I think it is interesting to look at where these devices are headed.  Something I viewed at the Wearable Tech Expo in NY was the HC1 Headset from Motorola.  This headset includes voice recognition and gestures, as you would expect.  However, it is targeted toward manufacturing and field users.  Imagine being in a warehouse and having this unit show you the path to a product.  How does that affect our work force?  My first thought is that it will increase non-English speaking labor.  The ability to view documents in the field will also allow for quicker trouble-shooting.  What will that mean for the equipment needed?  Are there additional accessories to be developed?  I'm already imagining a snap-on visor or rain protector.

     

    So, what do you think is next for wearable tech?

    I guess we could break it down into categories defining goals or purposes.  I do that anyway because engineering starts with understanding your requirements otherwise you don't know what you're doing and why.  DAB started us off very nicely down that road when he described the most hyped use of wearable technology (eg. hyped by Google).  I'll just quote DAB directly because he put it very clearly:

    That describes much of Google Glass, Google Goggles, many augmented reality applications, and all the way over to soldiers' HUDs at the less socially uplifting end of the spectrum.  I shortened it to "info-assist to enhance situational awareness" before, but now I'd like to do the opposite and break it apart into its building blocks, because they make better categories that we could use to describe other ideas for wearable technology.  I think it breaks down like this:

     

    1. Environment monitoring.  This means technology that detects events or conditions around you and nothing more, comprising sensors of numerous kinds and the low-level processing that turns raw data into usable info.
    2. Awareness processing.  This is information processing above the level of sensor data, and may involve inputs from a number of them.  For example, it could determine that "Something large is coming towards you, and there is 95% probability that it is a bus."
    3. Internet as database about everything.  Although wearable electronics could conceivably be self-contained and carry a huge amount of information on the person, in practice many people feel that having it online but accessible makes sense.  Like most things, it's a compromise and online has plenty of downsides too, but ultimately you can't carry the entirety of the world's knowledge on you so Internet connectivity is unavoidable for anything above a certain level of complexity.  Bus schedules and routes are sensibly found online.
    4. Situational applications.  These are context-sensitive applications which you have configured with local information and to meet personal requirements.  They close the loop between events detected, awareness of a situation obtained, and reacting to that situation by using non-local information plus private context.  So, an app might use [3] and [2] and then report to you that "It's the S124 bus which is your ride to the airport --- better stick out your hand."

     

    Those four categories capture quite a lot of what will be appearing in wearable technology, and as we all know, people are already working on it so we haven't actually done any extrapolation yet, merely analysed an ongoing concept that combines the above simple categories.

     

    Implicit in the above is "Data on demand", which I think pervades current thinking in the general space of mobile gadgetry, and "Online on demand" at a level beneath it.  Starting off with these two and environmental sensing, I'll just list some general categories of function that wearable technology will often be providing before too long.  (I'm calling the high-level bus app an "agent", because it's dedicated to doing a specific job on my behalf, and "app" is just too general.)  Armed with these categories, we'll have a few pigeon holes into which to place actual projects in wearable technology:

     

    • Online on demand
    • Data on demand
    • Entertainment on demand
    • Communication with people
    • Communication with things
    • Environment sensing and control
    • Energy generation
    • High level agents

     

    I'll kick off with some ideas in the category of Energy generation, which hasn't really had much press so far.  We've had piezo-electric generators in heels of shoes before, which is a very nice start, but every one of our movements could be a source of electrical power, as could the light around us, and also the temperature changes as we move from place to place.  Even electric fields in our vicinity could be harvested, although I don't recommend eating your lunch while lying against the company power transformers just to get charged up. image

     

    Communication with things is another of my favourite categories, but I'll leave that to another post.

    Hey, Morgaine,

     

    I think between all of us,we have given both the abstract version of the question, as well as a detailed category version.  So, hopefully some others will want to join in on the discussion?  I'm interested in all effects of the new inventions, so this could be fun.

     

    As far as your topic of energy generation, I don't know if you want to hold that for the last question  that will deal with "improvements" . I know Victor was really interested in adding to this part of the discussion.

     

    Sorry my answer is rather short, but I'm on my last days of holiday craziness and trying to do my company biz, projects and blogs at the same time.  Ultimately I need a clone, so that is way beyond wearables image.
