How to go about re purposing  an 80's boom-box

Easiest way i could think about doing it would to use the lleft and right wiring of the rradio so the audio out of the radio would be replaced by an aux in jack, or ahould i take everything out except the speakers, put in my own power system and amp, arduino as my controller, and even bluetooth shield,  still kinda noobish but if anyone wants to help me i could post some pictures  of the boom box disassembled, but im fairly certain ive located the radio part and and maybe the radio audio out,

(also want to put one of those led matrix sound level bar things in the radios window, to give it a cool vibe since i pooped up the tuning system :3 )

*and the dual cassete deck was broken so lots of empty sapce and room to play around

Just curious, but what are you putting inside to generate the new audio?  Sounds like a good possibility to drive it with a Pi, then add wireless if needed and put the whole MP3 library on board....

i thought amps drove the sound, and i would just take the sound from my smart phone or mp3 player by wither having an aux jack in and later add in a bluetooth shield (either from retail or program my own shield, most likely with an atmega 328, )

*btw the speaker DID have an "in" but only playble through the 2nd casstte deck, whcih muffled the sound and dident utilize the speakers fully, then switching to radio the sound quality, bass, and eveything sounds amazing, so thats why im having todo this hack.

Yes, sorry, amps would drive the sound.  My approach was using a Pi or some uP board to add a level of control and network capability.

If all you are doing is driving the speakers then a small amp is all you need - with a line input you can connect to your other items.  The bluetooth connectivity does come with some amps so you should be able to find some.

okay cool, another q, is would i use my own power system or use the power system that comes with the boom box? and if the amp has its on power would it be enough for my speakers?

For the power system question..it depends on all the voltages needed and if it has the outputs for such.  As for the power to push the speakers, how many watts does the amp supply and to what type of load?  Typically the load is a certain number of 8 ohm speakers.  The boom box probably has two large 8 ohm and maybe a few more smaller ones. ("woofers", "Tweeters")  Do you know how many watts the amp can supply?
