Newbie in Arduino and MQTT project-Need help

Former Member

Hi,

I am a newbie in Arduino and MQTT projects..I want to use Temperature sensor as MQTT client by connecting it with Arduino UNO and Ethernet Shield.

I want to buy the required components.Kindly let me know whether the below are the correct components for this...

Arduino UNO-Are the both same product? If no,which one is the best to buy?

1)https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11021

2)http://www.simplelabs.co.in/content/arduino-uno

Ethernet shield-Are the both same product? If no,which one is the best to buy?

1) http://www.ebay.in/itm/Ethernet-Shield-W5100-for-arduino-UNO-Mega-/141511630995?_trksid=p2054897.l4275

2)https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9026?

Hope I have to  buy RJ45 cable?

One more wire seems to be connected from the Arduino board with computer USB port as per the video "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xj6eA8BIvlQ".Not sure what is the use of it..Kindly explain me..

Radhamani,  The products you are comparing are essentially the same.  The Arduino UNO comes as the genuine item, which tend to be quite expensive, and then there are many clones.  The latest version is the UNO R3.  The cheapest clones generally come from China and the far east.  Some of the UNO clones use the CH340 USB interface, this is not the standard interface chip and may cause problems on some systems although I use these clones on my Windows 7 64 bit machine with no problems.

It is a similar story for the Ethernet board, the genuine items is expensive, and there are clones which are much cheaper.  In my experience the clones work perfectly well.  The ethernet shield plugs straight onto the UNO and so there are no wires to connect between the two.  The Ethernet shield then has sockets to connect external sensors etc.

There are no video cables associated with the UNO.  You need a cable to connect from your PC USB port to the UNO USB port.  The PC end of the cable is fairly standard and the official UNO uses a USB type B connector but some of the clones use the smaller USB connectors. A lot of clone boards include a cable so that is a good way to get started.

The Ethernet shield needs an Ethernet cable to link the shield to your PC or router Ethernet port.

There are some very good examples of using the Ethernet shield within the Arduino Ethernet library, I suggest you try these to gain experience.

For MQTT I suggest you install 'Mosquitto' as a broker on your PC and then use MQTT-Spy to to send / view packets.  There is a lot of information on both these items on the net.

    Hope that helps

    Bob

    Radhamani,

I can't help with prices as I do not know how Rs convert to dollars or pounds but in the UK (£) A clone UNO R3 can be bought from Hong Kong for approx. £3 and a clone W5100 Ethernet shield with an SD card reader included is approx. £5 from Hong Kong.  I have found Hong Kong based suppliers to be very good with delivery about 2-3 weeks to the UK.

Prices from UK based suppliers would be higher because of delivery charges, import duty, VAT, profit etc.

Thanks a lot bob..Its very helpful..

I am gonna purchase today UNO and EthernetShield. And cables I will go to shop and purchase..Once I buy everything, and if I face any issues in settingup,I will post my queries..

Once again I Thankyou..I have got some confidence in goinging ahead to purchase the items..

I have bought Arduino UNO ,Ethernet shield,USB 2.0 cable.

I will use USB2.0 cable to connect Arduino UNO to Computer and do the programs.

    I have some queries now...

1)For Ethernet Shield,I dont have router but I have modem. Can I connect Ethernet Shield to modem using RJ45 cable?

2)Once Arduino is programmed ,Can I use the 9 to 12V DC, 250mA or more, 2.1mm plug, centre pin positive as per Arduino Playground - WhatAdapter?

    1) If the modem is a cable modem with an RJ45, yes you can connect with it. If it has more than 1 RJ45, then it will act as a router as well. Please tell what type of modem to confirm.

    2) Yes that is the minimum current. Did you see:

Current rating: Since you'll probably be connecting other things to the Arduino (LEDs, LCDs, servos) you should get an adapter that can supply at least 500mA, or even 1000 mA (1 ampère). That way you can be sure you have enough juice to make each component of the circuit function reliably.

You may need a bit more for the Ethernet shield...

    Cheers,

    Clem

    Clem,

pretty well answered your questions and more current capacity is useful at times.  The other thing to watch is that the power supply you buy is 9-12 volt DC output, excessive input voltage is inefficient and can cause the regulator to run hot.  The other point to note is that if you do use accessories that draw a lot of current, powerful servo's, motors etc.  then it is better to power these from an independent supply rather than from the Arduino pins.  You also have to keep in mind that the Arduino UNO 328 package has an overall current limit of 200 mA for all pins combined, and a limit for any individual pin of 40 mA.  The 3.3 volt output pin can only supply 50 mA to external circuits.  Thus if you are only running the UNO and the attached device do not exceed 200 mA then the 250 Ma supply is adequate.

    good luck

    Bob

Now I have got all the components required for a simple Arduino and MQTT project.

To start with Arduino programming,I read in  "Intro to Arduino : Arduino IDE",  that I need to install Arduino Programmer which is the IDE and Arduino driver.

For Arduino programmer,I tried installing Arduino 1.6.0 Windows zip file non-admin install from " Arduino - Software  " .I am facing a problem in this download. After some 30 MB,the download is not proceeding.I also tried installing Arduino 1.6.0 Windows install.Even this is stuck up in some 60MB.I am not seeing any errors while downloading .But the download not proceeding...

Also for Arduino driver,as per "Arduino - Windows" looks like, drivers available only for Windows 7,XP,Vista.

My windows version is 8.1,64 bit.

Could you please suggest how to proceed with the software installations?

I am reasonably certain the windows 7 64 bit driver is OK with Win 8.

I find it best to use the Windows install option rather then the zip version, however if you do use the zip version try running it as am Administrator.
