Problem with Arduino Mega

Hi all,

I own an Arduino mega 2560 and have been having problems with it recently. When I load a sketch, this error comes up :

avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout

I can't figure out what it is ( I've read that its a problem with the communication with the computer). When I plug it in the green power LED turns on and so does the orange pin 13 LED. I think that the sketches we're uploading at one point ( I'm not 100% sure as I didn't get it doing anything due to my lack of arduino knowledge ). I am on mac running OS X Yosemite.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Have you checked you have the right programmer set in the IDE, I remember having a similar issue way back and it was because I had changed this setting inadvertently

When you start programming, do you see the LEDs start to flash (The coms LEDs)
