Problem with Arduino Mega

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

Hi all,

I own an Arduino mega 2560 and have been having problems with it recently. When I load a sketch, this error comes up :

avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout

avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout

I can't figure out what it is ( I've read that its a problem with the communication with the computer). When I plug it in the green power LED turns on and so does the orange pin 13 LED. I think that the sketches we're uploading at one point ( I'm not 100% sure as I didn't get it doing anything due to my lack of arduino knowledge ). I am on mac running OS X Yosemite.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

thanks

Kelan

    Have you checked you have the right programmer set in the IDE, I remember having a similar issue way back and it was because I had changed this setting inadvertently

    When you start programming, do you see the LEDs start to flash (The coms LEDs)

    I would follow Robert Peter Oakes advice. You can check the target board is correct by going to 'Tools > Board' and seeing which one is selected.

    Thanks for the advice, I selected the right board ans processor but still nothingimage. I think the problem is the Port, I read somewhere that is should be port " /dev/tty.usbmodem1411 " but I only have "/dev/cu". Any more ideas?

    Thanks

    p.s. the LEDs don't flash when programming

    Is AVRISP the right programmer ?I know this is the default now and once I can find my Mega I will try it but that seems to be the 6 pin port from memory

    Regards

    Peter

    I think you need to look at udev and set one up for the Mega, Foir an example of how Arduino Playground - Udev

    The ATmega16U2 (or 8U2 in the rev1 and rev2 boards) firmware source code is available in the Arduino repository. The ATmega16U2/8U2 is loaded with a DFU bootloader, which can be activated by:

    • On Rev1 boards: connecting the solder jumper on the back of the board (near the map of Italy) and then resetting the 8U2.
    • On Rev2 or later boards: there is a resistor that pulling the 8U2/16U2 HWB line to ground, making it easier to put into DFU mode. You can then use Atmel's FLIP software (Windows) or the DFU programmer (Mac OS X and Linux) to load a new firmware. Or you can use the ISP header with an external programmer (overwriting the DFU bootloader). See this user-contributed tutorial for more information.

    If this does not work you may need to put back the DFU boot loader for the support chip that handles USB.  See oddWires: Repairing an Arduino Mega or Uno USB port

    It seems there are some issues with the wrong driver being installed.

    This link here had some useful thoughts

    http://arduino.stackexchange.com/questions/3324/arduino-compatibles-serial-port-not-showing-mac-osx

    Sparkfun is most likely to be with genuine Arduino products, but might help

    https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/how-to-install-ftdi-drivers/mac

    This one here gave a whole lot of other thoughts.
